The power of marketing…
Discussion
Just caught up with a colleague last week to look over her new MK 8 Golf Gti ,nice enough looking car but interior a bit meh…!!
Any way got me thinking about the conversation we had when I bought the Giulia ,oh that’s a step into the unknown is it not ..!!!
I replied lightheartedly that her last 3 VAG cars had all failed and 2 were beyond economic repair at less than 9 years old ,not that it puts me up or down but even when the cold facts are evident people still buy what is pushed as the epitome of quality and reliability,I could understand it in the 80’s when the difference between a Golf and an Escort was clear but now…!!

Last well made car VAG sold said "Made in West Germany" on the VIN plate as far as I can see. Back in the 80s they were head and shoulders above turds like the Metro and the Fiesta, Mk2 Polos were still everywhere long after all the Mk1 Fiestas had rotted away or been scrapped with knackered engines for example, but that gap closed to nothing through the 90s and they seem to have developed a raging hard on for massively overcomplicating everything without a corresponding hard on for building the many many many components they insist on using to last.
The new post dieselgate ones are so obviously shoddy and tinny, and the mechanical failures at a young age are now so commonplace that even the most marketing addled consumer does seem to be realising that they might actually be a bit crap though.
