Help looking for a new coat suitable for UK Winter but also a trip to Lapland. I currently have a 5 year old Timberland Puffer jacket which is plenty warm enough but useless in anything more than a brief shower.

Quite like the puffer jacket style although my current one is perhaps a bit too puffy! Struggling to find something that will be both warm and waterproof. Everything i have found is either a warm lifestyle coat or is waterproof but more of a top layer rain jacket.

Any suggestions?

You might want to specify a price limit before someone comes along and recommends a Montblanc coat for £2500 or something ...

I'd have gone North face Mcmurdo, but I see the prices have gone crazy. Used to be £250. frown.

You also might want to specify your age as some people on here have some VERY strange ideas about what is acceptable clothing and footwear.

As an example, whenever there is a thread on here asking for some stylish casual leather shoes, the following always gets suggested. It just gives a scary insight into the mind of some of the middle aged people on here.

You could always go to an outdoor clothing shop and try a few on.

What fits one person may not fit another.

I'm middle aged (53) and I wouldn't say I'm the last word in sartorial elegance but Jesus H.....if there was ever a shoe that says "I've given up and my wife buys my clothes", that's it.

My second home it seems, but they DO sell some lovely stuff. I'd probably go with this.

Warm and waterproof and although a little over budget it’s a great price.

Mines been tested in freezing driving rain in Iceland and was brilliant. Great for static stuff in UK winter but probably too hot for hiking/walking distances.

I have this one which has been tested in -24c lapland winters but is also ok here when it gets to 0c, only water resistant though.

Got one of these - warm but they are useless in the rain (OP said this was an issue).

I'd be looking at the Rab Valiance. Waterproof down jacket and you might find one for 200 quid on offer (my missus has one and she loves it).

If you you can dig deeper into your piggybank OP and you really want to be warm and dry, I'd recommend the Rab Batura; again, a waterproof down jacket (a lot more heavyweight than the Valiance) and you won't be cold wearing one. I've got one (in black) and it's kept me safe, warm and dry in some pretty harsh conditions.

I know these coats are expensive, and I can see why people may hesitate at spending big money on one, but if you are on a trip to Lapland or similar, you want to make sure you can enjoy it and not be miserable, cold and wet. It's not my world, but I'm told people spend hundreds of quid on one meal in a restaurant... puts things into perspective IMO.

Check out the Hiking Gear and Adventures thread if you want more info on outdoor gear.

From 20+ years of skiing in increasingly extreme conditions... you may want to consider separate layering. It will keep you warmer than any single jacket and will be a better combo than a single jacket can manage. It will be more expensive than a single item obvs....

My current gear for five years now is Stellar Equipment. The standard shell jacket plus the down jacket over a mid layer and base layer kept me toasty at -26 degrees and howling wind on the Aiguille du Midi. I've worn the jacket as a waterproof without issues.

My wife bought a winter coat last year and only wears a base layer underneath it.

Tempted to get one myself but it was too bloody expensive for me!
