Why did signwritten walls die out?

Seing the above saddened me a bit. Somehow a street absolutely scrawled over with business names looks a lot better than a plastic sign and some blank pebbledash.
I'm reminded of the side of a house near where I grew up which still had the remains of a Castrol advert from when it was a mitoring supply shop.
Did such writing die out due to the cost of signwriters, or do councils get huffy if you write on walls these days. Or is it a case if fewer landlords and more property owners back then who would do as they pleased?

Actually saw that being done & spoke to the signwriter. It was made easier than I thought as he had a huge sheet of plastic pierced about every inch with the outlines of the words & pattern. Having secured it he patted the plastic with a sponge full of chalk. Remove sheet & paint to the dotted outline!
