I have recently noticed a rattling when braking using the gears. It occurs above about 2500 revs and is most obvious in 5th and 3rd gear.

Any ideas?

Without meaning to be offensive, my first idea is brake using the brake pedal not the gears (the first thing a racing driver taught me on a racing driver day thing...)... Using the gears can knacker them....

Im not actually engine braking but said that to describe when it occurs. What I mean is when im drving and lift the throttle off, the noise occurs then, when the car is driving without any pressure on the accelerator

Ah.

Does it do this when idling? Could be the gearbox is on the way out, or needs oiling.. Does it have problems finding reverse?

There are no problems finding gear, its just when resting on the gear. When it gets to below approximately 2500 revs the noise stops. I hope the gearbox is not on its way out as the car has only done 28k miles!!

The K series box is notoriously noisy. Mine wines and thrashes like hell on throttle lift off - especially in 4th and 5th. I was concerned at first but have been told that TADTS. Consider the fact that there is very little noise insulation between you and the box as well.

<touch wood> Also, I rag the hell out of mine on track and it's not broke yet </touch wood>
