Gearbox oil seal - should this plastic be removed?

As per title I've never seen seals with this plastic ring before & not sure if it should stay in place or be removed?

What does the old one look like ?

Sorry for the generic picture. The seal is for an Alfa which doesn’t have the plastic on the original.

I'd say it stays, clearly crimped into the metal shell.

Probably there to help centralise upon fitment to prevent stress on the outer lip seal.
