Help needed re handsets and service proiders

Long story...but I need a new handset to replace old Nokia 6310. It's on a business tarrif through orange but we are changing to Vodaphone in about 6 weeks. My 6310 is dead, so ideally rather than get another from orange, I want to get a snazzy 6230 put in the orange sim then in 6 weeks put in the vodaphone sim. Is it possible to buy a handset on its own and secondly will it accept both service providers cards or are the handsets coded or something to only work with one provider??

Do you get a mobile with the Vodafone contract? If so, could you get a cheap PAYG mobile and use that for a few weeks?

I think Carphone Warehouse do sim free handsets, as do www.expansys.com
