So....

All TV stations cut to a special broadcast by the Government. Rishi Sunak starts off by saying there is no easy way to break this news.

The past two weeks it has been identified that there is an object heading towards earth,
This object initially showed signs that it was going to be a near miss.
But further calculations indicated that it was not going to be so, that infact there was going to be a collision between the object and earth.
That this object would collide with the northern hemisphere in around 7/8 months.

A massive impact event.

What do you think would be the effect ? How do you think the next 6-7 months would pan out ?

curious, what would the world be like once the end game had been confirmed.

I guess the government would setup a ‘fast track lane’ for any pub landlords, property developers or finance consultants they know who want to start contracting to provide space launch services or extra-vehicular activity expertise for the mission to push the asteroid off course.

The impact would definitely help halve inflation

In the event that there was going to be a cataclysmic event that our lizard overlords knew about in advance, us mere plebs wouldn’t be told about it.

Mind you, there was a ‘M-class’ solar flare ejected from our Sun the other day, which thankfully missed Earth.

If we’d have received the full force of that, it could have caused a few problems.

I'd want to hear about the new fangled system that allows us to have that much warning! /geek

Current systems would give you a week at most

This is a number of not great books/films.

For the record, this isn’t unthinkable. This is just orbital mechanics. Statistically we’re overdue a large impact

As a species, what are we doing about it?

Play my piano composition in a concert hall.

Have sex with the types of women I hadn't previously.

Phone all the gas company customers to reassure them that the supply would continue to the end.

Have a big family Thanksgiving meal.

Agree a suicide pact with a stranger.

Brilliant film.

Let's face it, it would be anarchy. They would be best covering it up for as long as possible!

And an X-class a few weeks ago. At least 10 times stronger than that one. Happens all the time !

I'd be raging, I've just booked a holiday for next July.

The level of chaos and anarchy that would follow means I probably wouldn't be able to do much. We'd probably all be begging for the end to come.

What a cheery thought!

I know I'm going to die in the next 40 years, probably in the next 20, possibly tomorrow.
Give me an exact date and it just lets me plan enjoying my retirement a little better.

The world immediately descends into interminable arguments about:

Whether the asteroid identities as he/she/they and what it likes to get up to with other asteroids

Whether it should have the same rights as other earth rocks that were here first

Whether it constitutes a bigger or smaller threat than human climate change

Whether the whole thing is actually a holographic psy-op to usher in a new world order

How it is going to affect house prices (Daily Mail comments section)

Everyone becomes an expert on orbital mechanics (sales of Kerbal go through the roof) and exactly how many nukes we need to break the thing up. Everyone has a mate who has the inside gen on how it's going to be dealt with but can't say any more for security reasons.

And yes, toilet paper.
