I am thinking of getting a new pc and using my current Shuttle machine (Athlon 2200, 768mb ram , 250gb hd) as a video recorder alongside my normal tv. The only thing I cant figure is which pci card to get to record/capture the video and sound from the tv etc...many out there but no is no clear product to buy for this function, it needs tv tuner (analogue or freeview) , record and save function, and some sort of programming/timer...and of course playback through back to the tv screen.

Hauppage MCE-500 (try www.scan.co.uk) and Windows Media Centre (MCE 2005) and remote will do the lot for you.

I am going to do this with my old AthlonXP 2100 once I've migrated to my shiny new FX-57 (when it's finished )

May I suggest the Hauppage Nova-T freeview receiver from Scan along with the GB-PVR software package (for Windows - worth a look if you don't fancy diving into Linux for MythTV).

Nova-T = £60
www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=9833

GB-PVR = £0 (yep - freeware)

I've been thinking about this and have narrowed irt down to.,.

www.nebula-electronics.com/products/products.asp?class=digitv

or

http://blackgold.tv/

I have not tried wither of these but have read up a fair bit. The nebula seems to be the better card with a good software suite which will let you stream the output to other computers on your network. The issue is that you cannot yet have two in your system.

The black gold does support two tuners so you can watch something and record something else.

MCE 2005 is really good. I've got a Hush E3 machine running it and it's fantastic. The only issue with it is if you run dual monitors. The eHome app grabs the mouse pointer.

But, it'll even record your programs without running eHome (there's a service).
