Just driving into Bournmouth and there was an almighty clunk from the front and felt something metal bounce under me bum and disappear down the duel carriageway. Couldn't get off so had to just slow down. Preasures looked good and no over heating. BUT when braking there was always a clunk and same clunk over bumps. Feathered her to safe place and called RAC. Very nice man put spare caliper bolt in the top hole as the other one had decided to come out and bottom one was working its way out too!! Bit of a worry I can tell you. The nice man checked others and all tight. Might be worth you all having a little look under behind your front wheels? Hate to hear of someone else nearly having heart failier too

I had this on mine earlier this year after having changed my discs and pads.
Driving down the A1 only to hear a massive thud and clunk when braking. Stopped the car to find the top caliper bolt has freed itself, even though I'd done them up super tight. Had to drive 15 miles home on the handbrake - not nice.
I've since replaced the original allen bolts with normal hex bolts along with a ton of threadlock - I don't think you can really get the Allen ones done up tight enough - As you say though it is very scary to have happen.

Put a 10mm socket on the end of the allen key with the extension bar and then tighten it up. You get plenty of leverage that way.
