Orders open now for Polo GTI 25

All good things turn 25 in 2023 - this Polo costs a bit more than a PH25 ticket, mind

The Polo GTI 25 may well have passed you by when it was announced back in May, because that’s kind of the Polo GTI thing. And black accents, new logos and fresh stickers aren’t going to change that. But, hey, it’s a light, front-drive petrol hatch with more than 200hp - in 2023, we’ll take them however they come. Even if that is in Ascot Grey.

Today orders open for the VW Polo GTI Edition 25, though weirdly it says that the car is on sale from August 3rd. Count us in the ‘today years old’ group who thought they were the same thing. Whatever, it’s going to cost £31,295, which will probably elicit the same amount of air sucked through teeth as most new car prices these days. In fairness, a limited edition Polo GTI was never likely to stand out as a value proposition, and those who were going to by an i20 N anyway were never going to have their head swayed. VW will more likely point to the incredible success of the Golf R 333 - sold out in eight minutes at more than twice the price - as evidence that its limited edition strategy is just fine. There will be 350 cars allocated for the UK out of 2,500 in total, and it seems unlikely that any will remain unspoken for, whether here or anywhere else, for very long. People like Polos, VW GTIs and limited editions, especially when they might well be the last of their kind.

That said, if this announcement has you wondering what other GTIs might be available for £31,295, join the club. Take the old Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40 for example, probably as good as the old model got (aside from the very limited Clubsport S). This 2017 car ticks a lot of boxes as a three-door, white manual, and has covered just 18,000 miles. A nice way to spend £25k. The current Polo GTI, the car this Edition is derived from, can be bought from £14k. And it seems like originals might just be creeping up in value - this 2000 example is £4k. Be the perfect thing for the PH25 car park…

The "base" Polo GTI has to be about the blandest looking cars on sale right now. I know this part of vw's thing, but it is rather extraordinary in how unremarkable it looks. IMO of course.

I am sure this will be a great little car, actually thought it was yet another limited edition golf at first glance...

I kinda like that

I had a couple of Mk4 Golf GTI’s and this Polo looks a similar size as them

With 200bhp I’d imagine it’s quite fun

However … If it has haptic buttons and no separate heating controls that might change my view of it laugh

And in this case ‘its’ is spelled ‘it’s’. ‘Its’ is the possessive pronoun.
I will eschew discussing about whether it should be ‘spelled’ or ‘spelt’

Give me bland for this type of car. This could be the last decent petrol hatch.

I am looking for a new daily and i have a test drive tomorrow in the Polo gti (not 25) and have managed to get a quote of £26k.

Is the 25 worth the extra?

But your opinion is correct. Deeply bland and why has it been given black wheels to drag its class down? Sadly - and there are many posts on this- VW has been trading on its perceived quality for years. I’m sure it won’t be a bad drive, but for what it is it’s silly money.

I'm trying to get my head around almost £32k for a polo and that's before options if you spec those on top.

This will be a great wee car. I honestly don't get the kinda reverse snobbery about VW.

I have the current Polo GTi. It does have haptics, but they aren't as bad as you might think. You can just click them once as a button. Or swipe them. In normal driving it's a normal Polo. That changes in sport mode, though. It puts a grin on my face everytime. I also had the last Polo GTi, and that was the same.
I've had 2 Fiesta STs and the 5 pot Focus ST, too. They were ok, but it's the duality of the Polo that appeals to me. Comfy and quiet, or a bit insane when you want it to be.
Regarding the blandness; no car I've ever owned has garnered as much interest from my family/ friends as this one. I can't work out why, because yes, it isn't shouty at all.

Ha, yep, it really is. The only thing that lets it down is the armrest. It's a bit low, and can't be raised. A bottle of coke in the cupholder kind of sorts it. Oh, and there are no grab handles. My Mrs really would have liked something else to grab on to. Ooer.

Not for me; it’s a lot of money and the Polo GTI has never really held much appeal for me.

Glanced at the pic and the sub-head on the homepage, and hoped it was a Golf 8 GTI mid-life refresh – with a redesigned nose. Dream on frown

You could get a decent Golf R for that money
