This is why the UK driving standard is dropping if driving instructors have this attitude and don't give a f*** -

I think you may be ascribing entirely too much influence to a single driving instructor.

Do you have any actual evidence that driving standards are falling? My understanding is that the UK's roads are pretty much as safe as they've ever been, which is fairly remarkable given the current volume of traffic is close to the pre-pandemic all-time high. If the volume of traffic is increasing, and standards are getting worse, wouldn't you expect to see worsening accident figures?

Looks like the standard / typical bad parking that most of us probably see a few examples of every day when out on a drive, walk, cycle, etc.

Pretty much the standard fodder that's nicely suited to the bad parking thread on here tbh - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Its more the response the driving school gave, completely irrelevant if they allegedly were only parked there "for a min or two".

Saw a learner driver yesterday in the heavy rain with no lights on. Are we teaching people to just use the st show that is automatic headlights?

After living in Asia for six years, four in Japan and two in the Philippines, I cannot express how badly I long for U.K. driving standards. Be grateful; there are sh*tty drivers everywhere but northern/Western European (and the U.K.) driving standards are the best in the world.

That may be the case, but standards HAVE dropped. Politeness and consideration aren't as common as they used to be. Nor is sense.

I think selfishness has increased.
Ever since social media people are more selfish and self absorbed. I think this is the primary reason of a lot of the general worsening of the uk.

The instructor my eldest had was always messing with his vape with the window going up and down. The worst time was on his test, the guy spilt the vape down his shirt and my son had to drive to his house so that he could get changed, giving no time to practice manoeuvres. Had he not passed I would have gone nuts.

As someone who drives for a living (buses) I personally feel it has got worse over the years, I guess we do tend to see more of it also by the amount of dashcam videos on YouTube that maybe suggest it's rife out there where people's attitudes to others on the road is simply "I'll do what i want and I don't care what you think " there's good and bad of all kinds of drivers out there, regardless of what you drive, but in general speaking from my job perspective some people are incredibly inpatient, can't or won't use indicators properly, and can be threatening if for whatever reason you are stopping them going about a way they want to drive.

Poor driving instructors ain’t the only reason, or anywhere near the top.

It’s lack of enforcement. If bad parkers came back to find a ticket stuck to the windscreen they’d soon twig that it’s not ok.

Driving standards are not worse, people think they are because everything is captured on camera and posted to the internet for a moan.

Some is down to how poor visibility is in modern cars, the sporty look heavily raked windscreens leading to blind spot through eye level cross section of A pillar increasing as the windscreens become more horizontal, high door metalwork and smaller windows all round driver sitting ever lower in the car unable to see anything of the bonnet, port hole sized rear screen and massive C pillars, door mirrors now part of car design rather than rectangular useful items.
Exacerbated by the fashion for reclining position presumably in the car with the seat at the lowest setting, whats all that about, sometimes you can only see the top half of the drivers head.

Our cars are older designs by preference, Forester and Prado, can see the whole bonnet from the drivers seat, big windows tops of door skins notably lower, door mirrors are huge and provide excellent coverage, A pillars are upright enough that the blind area from eye level cross section is minimal.
I had reason to use a more modern Civic for a month recently, not only can you not see the bonnet at all, when turning left in particular the lack of visibility when compared to our own cars was surprising.

How much easier driving is when you have good visibility.

Yep. As someone noted above the reportable incident / traffic volume rates are good-unexceptional by historic standards, and that's pretty much the end of story. People might not like how others drive but the functional outcomes of people's behaviours are no worse.

There used to be an old boy (on another forum) who used to insist that standards were on the ground and no statistical consideration would trump the anecdotes stamped on his brain. "Something, something, 40 years a policeman" (great, so versus the stats your anecdotes *might* be slightly less worthless.) He's never alone.

All fraught with statistical errors and assumptions.
