Cayenne owners, do you think it'd be risky to buy a used 958.2 3.0 V6 diesel, probably 90k miles on the clock and probably also a 2015 model (so outside of the transfer case warranty), without also paying for a Porsche warranty?

I've been reading up on the 958s as much as possible, watching YouTube buyers' guides, owners' experience videos etc and at first they sounded pretty bombproof as I could only find very positive experiences, but then I started finding things along the lines of "I'm on my third transfer case in 35k miles" and now I'm wary of ending up with a money pit.

As far as I can tell, the transfer case issue is the only common big one on the aforementioned car, and it's caused by water ingress into the oil. Is this correct and if so, isn't there some mod/fix that can be done to prevent this from happening? I've had 4x4s in the past where I've had to extend the diff breather (for example) to prevent water ingress into the diff oil.

I’m not sure current owners would necessarily be keen to say much to talk down their assets.
Previous owners on the other hand …

Current owner here. 2013 GTS based in the US so 10 year extended warranty on the transfer case. As the warranty was approaching its end, I took the car in and asked them to assess it. They drove it around the block and told me they would replace it free of charge.

Frankly, from the description here Extended warranty for transfer gear Cayenne model year 2015 - 2018, if there were any symptoms they have not changed with the replacement.

I believe there is a vent tube change that prevents the issue from happening on the original boxes. Also, changing the oil in the transfer case seems to prevent it.

I have been looking at replacing my car with the updated model and have not been able to justify the $100k+ cost to upgrade. I even prefer the looks of mine. When I had some work done on the car recently at the dealer they told me to keep mine and not to buy the 2022 GTS they had for sale at $130k.

I might be wrong but I’m sure I read the transfer case issue doesn’t affect the 3.0 diesel. It has a tiptronic box and a different style of case

Recent buyer of a 2012 958 with 72k on the clock.

I would recommend getting a really good inspection of the underside & suspension for age related wear (bushings, leaking struts etc).

Thanks for the info re: the transfer case. It sounds like some more research is required and if I'm lucky it's irrelevant for the model I'm considering, but if not, possibly not as huge an issue as I'd thought.
