Why do we pay more for diesel in the UK...

France, for example, is only 59 cents per litre which is a fair bit cheaper than here!

Based on my experience, we don’t right now, across the board.
I’m coming home today after a month in Portugal, Spain and France.
The cheapest supermarket diesel I found in France was €1.74, about £1.50 on my credit card.
When I left the UK a month ago, I had filled up at £1.38.
Spain and Portugal were on a level with UK prices.
Have UK prices gone up during July and early August?

I believe it’s refinery/processing costs, but could be wrong.
One think I do know though is that we pay (certainly where I live) quite a lot less for either petrol of diesel than some of our European neighbours. I’ve seen higher prices in France, Italy, Greece & Turkey this year. I’m in Portugal at the moment and it’s a similar story.

Because some mainland european countries have lower fuel duty on Diesel than Petrol.
I think much more relevant than that to the cost of motoring is we have little to no toll roads.
Every motorway in Portugal is a toll road. Driving from Porto to, say, Portimao in the Algarve, is 47 euro just in tolls for 340 miles, almost 100 euro for the round trip. You can do Edinburgh to Brighton via the M1 and not pay a single toll.

And, there’s still road tax to pay. MarkJS said:

Technically there isn't road tax, but the point that the money has to come from somewhere is certainly sound. Tolls give the consumer a truer picture of the total cost of road transport, we see the "rolling stock" costs directly whereas the infrastructure costs are imperceptible things paid from our taxes.

Slight tangent but the difference between normal diesel and posh diesel is a lot smaller - 8c per litre for Total Excellium in France, for example, compared to 12p or more in the UK. Not sure if that has anything to do with the price of all fuel grades displayed on the digital totems, compared to standard unleaded and diesel in the UK.
Fun to see this list: Dozens of countries ranked by cost of petrol:

Interesting findings:
- Price per litre is the same in the UK as it is in the Central African Republic. At the end of the work day, how many full tanks can an average household buy?
- Iran looking very affordable! Reckon I can live there with a couple of Hellcats? ; )
- Eye-watering Hong Kong.

Is there not still the annual Pagar o Imposto Único de Circulação to pay?
