Chasing the same car – what’s it worth?
Discussion
Hi all, I am looking for a bit of advice on a car I seem to have been chasing for a while.
I’ve been looking at Porsche 997’s for a long time and back in June 2020 the perfect car turned up on the market. The car was exactly what I wanted, low mileage and with some nice mods and looked in great condition. At the time the car was advertised at £27k but unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough and missed out on the car.
Fast forward to Nov 2022 and the same car appeared on the market again but this time at £35k, so £8k more than it was advertised at several years earlier. The car still looked great, but I felt the price increase was too high to justify, particular being a 997.1 so I passed on the car.
Fast forward a further 6 months and the car is back on the market again, this time at a well-known Porsche independent. They now want £37k for the car so again another £2k increase since it’s last sale. I spoke to them and said that I knew the car and I was interested but they told me there was absolutely no negotiation on the price.
The car was listed in April this year and hasn’t sold in nearly 4 months. The market seems to have really dropped off so I am wondering if they would consider doing a deal? I’m not sure what money I'd offer for the car though so any ideas? Personally I was thinking around £32k. That’s might sound cheeky as it's a good chunk under the asking price but isn't far off what it sold for last year when the market was really strong.
The fact I keep chasing the same car makes me feel like I’m destined to own it, but what would you do given the current market?
Thanks
Trev

I'd be wondering why it keeps coming up for sale and whether it has issues. At 37 there is no way dealer will let it go for less than 35 unless it's SOR and owner wants out. Mods, rather than manufacturer options, often devalue a car and/or limit its market.
Modern 911s are used as daily drivers but 997s are probably in the modern classics category now so mainly owned as 2nd or 3rd cars. This sector of the market is struggling so patience may get you a better price or better car shortly.
