I would like to know of any owners or specialists of boxsters that can help me with a concern regarding my new 2005 2.7 boxster. Every now and again (about 1 in 4) it blows a noticable amount of smoke from the back when it is started. It usually occurs from cold starts, but has been known to do it shortly after a run, but always from a start up. I have raised this concern with my local porsche centre who assure me that it is the design of the engine (with it being flat) that oil can collect in the bores and it really is nothing to worry about....mmm this maybe but even so it looks awful when it happens and doesn't help with the "new Porsche image" when everyone can't see the car for smoke!
Any advice would be appreciated.
Many thanks, Martin.

This explanation has been quoted on this forum before I think - suggest do a search. Seems a reasonable explanation, given that pistons are horizontal (so I understand!). Mine does it too!

Ahem, they all do that It can get worse before the car is due a service, but the garage aren't pulling your leg. Unlike a vertical cylinder, the oil doesn't drain out of the bores, hence the smoke at startup.

Just make sure you do the cold starts when there's no-one around to see them

Had it about 5 times on my 986 in 13 months.

I've seen a 987 do the same and about 5 times worse than mine too - lasted a good 15 seconds.

It is oil collecting in the horizontl cylinder bores.

Only once has this happened on ours in 3000 miles since we bought it. I'm not overly concerned.

Mine`s done it several times - one time truly spectacularly with fog rolling down the street.

Nothing to worry about.

Indeed. Had a shock when it happened to me first time I also put in a post about this; have a look in this forum under my username

Thanks to everyone for your advice, this is the first Porsche for me and also the first time i have used a forum. It would seem I can now sleep a little easier knowing that this smoke issue is nothing more than bad eye candy for the enthusiast (or good for the jealous git that can't wait to tell me my car is buggered!). I look forward to using this forum again and hope i can be of help to some of you in the future, but for now I think I should stop typing and go and enjoy the sounds of the flat 6 (with or without the smoke!)
