Whilst up at the factory a couple of weeks ago, I was saddened to see the prototype Sagaris from the Birmingham Motor Show just sitting there very neglected but still saveable. The £15,000 paint job was abused to say the least and the interior tatty.
This was probably the last vehicle of the PW reign and the birth of a stunning new model.
History will prove it to be a very important car.
I made noises about purchasing it, but was told it was not for sale and would probably be scrapped once all reusable parts had been removed.
I havent given up hope and would be willing to persue this car. Is anyone else interested in trying to obtain it and restore it to its former glory?
Currently the work is just cosmetic as it isn't very old, but in the future it would probably need a full restoration.
I am not talking about a quick fix to make money, I think this car should be preserved, and be as important to TVR history as the "White Elephant"
Any takers can reply here or through my profile.

I think there are tax issues these day which is why a lot of protoype's get scrapped.

the development cost of that saggy was probably 250-500k so that will have been put down as r&d and written off at 100%. As i understand it if they sell it then they have to pay some tax back.

I think thats what happened to rover when they gave the 6r4/xj220 engine to twr to settle a debt. they ended up paying many times more back to the tax man than they owed twr

The other issue is product liability..

I think Landrover get away with it by donating some of their prototypes to the dunsfold landrover trust so maybe worth talking to them to see how they deal with prototypes.

If there is interest in setting up a TVR Heritage trust I'd be intereswted in helping out, and can probably get some free expert consultancy on how to do set things up.

the biggest dificulty long term is finding somewhere to store things...

I think Graham's right with the tax thing.
It does seem a shame though.

Maybe theres something that can be done if it's going to a registered charity?

I'm sure a certain Lord Montagu would happily find space for it to be stored...

Hmm thanks guys, Thought it wouldn't be as easy as just making an offer.
Really is a shame though.
Did the SP12 survive as it was actually produced as a road car??
I only ask as the Sagaris is registered and has a tax disc, be it out of date by a good few months.
Would this still class it as a "prototype"?
I can see the shell ending up round the back for ten years before someone rescues it.

A production model effectively with a posh paint job and some minor cosmetic differences is surely never going to be a museum piece?

Wheelers legacy lives on in the shape of the production Sagaris which whilst different is still Wheelers car.

Nice idea but I think I would find it very difficult to justify given the potential for return.

its not quite that simple the pressure for space on motor museums is quite High. I do have contacts with most uk museums though

just thinking about the savable prototypes

1) the Evante
2) the original Speed 12 racer ( not the cerb based one)
3)the griff speed 6
4)the saggy ass

what happened to all the others ?

This isn't the forties!

It's a cut throat world out there.

No time for nostalgia.

It probably had lead in it anyway...

It was a one off colour scheme never to be repeated according to PW, It originally was a Honda motorcycle colour again according to PW.

i was told, it was that expensive due to the time it takes to get it perfect, its a very hard colour to spray.

I was with Land Rover in Austria ealier this year where they had eight or nine production freeloaders and three pre-production Disco IIIs. I asked what was going to happen to the cars when they return to England and was told that the Freeloaders would be auctioned and the Disco's would be crushed. reason...nothing to do with tax but Land Rover didn't want cars out on the open market that weren't proper spec.
I think it's up to TVR to decide whether there are tax implications and let them fix their asking price accordingly. It shouldn't stop anyone making a reasonable offer.

The Cerbera Speed 12 was recently bought and made road legal.

I can understand the tax thing though. However it does seem quite a shame. I cannot understand that a small manufacturer would spend £15,000 on paint showcasing what they can do then mistreat it. If nothing else it would be great to show the superrich what they can have on their plaything! I am sure Merc dont do the same colour!

The 'white elephant' comment was also quite right. I dont know of many manufacturers who would get people to put deposits down on cars based on a Motorshow car with an exterior you cant have (the bonnet slashes - for your own good maybe...) an interior you cant have, in a stunning colour they wont do for you again and running on wheels you also cant have.

Astonishing!

However it must be said that the Sagaris in the flesh has grown on me much more than seeing the first pictures.

The problem with the consortium might be the upkeep costs. Think of the stone chips from through the open vents. THen thing how much a perfectly matched front end respray is on a custom £15k paint job...

I think it is correct that a lot of silver coats were applied prior to the "Candy" top coat, and then laquer. Criminal to see what high heals from photo sessions have done to the wing vents.

I have emailed the factory just to enquire again re the future of this car.

I received an email from Blackpool today saying the Sagaris is still being used for development purposes so isn't for sale.
No harm in leaving it a while and trying again in the future.
