I've done a fair bit of hiking and backpacking and, using a small tent, am always worried about where I pitch it. I try to make sure its impossible for anyone arriving at the site after dark to accidentally run over the tent.

I can't believe people were happy to pitch these tents right alongside an A road or that the campsite allowed anything other than vans/motorhomes to use the part of the site alongside the road.

To be fair to them, it looks like there's a pavement, small (possibly unhelpful) bank and a ditch between campers and road. And it's a 30 zone.

I've stayed at that campsite a few times and there is a decent separation between the road and the field usually. I'm presuming the site was full hence tents so close to the road. The run into Newgale is downhill from the south so easy to get a lot of speed up if you want to but the left hander as you get to the bottom of the hill can unsettle a car at speed, easily enough to make you slide into the shale and pebble bank on the left. A few years go now they made it 30 mph towards the bottom of the hill, before the limit changed halfway along the straight. I think this isn't the first car to end up in the campsite but definitely the first to hit campers. Sadly the roads and near-zero policing in the area mean the locals treat it as a racetrack a lot of the time.

Hopefully everyone hurt makes a good recovery and the driver gets what they deserve.

Is it some sort of overflow field? I wouldn't personally be happy camping that close to a public road, mainly from the fact that it seems unfenced - anyone could wander in, or kids wander out into the road.

It seems like a popular spot for surfers and beachgoers and the road would be no different to any other 30 road and classed as a residential area, so the dangers of children running into the road are the same as any other. The attraction for the campsite would be its easy access to the beach. I dont think they expect a speeding overloaded Fiesta driven by a new driver to crash there often not that a fence would have stopped the car anyway. There is a small ditch on the perimeter of the campsite near the path that runs alongside the road. Maybe over the years a fence has never been needed as security in a campsite is never great anyway and there is potential for those already in the campsite to wander around unchallenged. It doesnt strike me as an area with a high crime rate.
