I’ve just put a deposit on a 993, and while viewing I couldn’t work out what this aluminium canister is, any ideas?

...also called Idle Control Valve, if you live in Europeland rather than in the States.

What's with the silver/metal rod holding up the engine lid on the top LHS?

You might need a pair of gas damper/lifter/strut. Stabilus are the best. That'll be your first fifty quid spent hehe
