Good evening all

Due to the imminent expansion of the ULEZ in London, my beloved and very well looked after 2009 jaguar XF 3.0ds has to go. I can probably add max 5k to it's value which is going to be at best 4k (106k miles, 8 previous owners) and the new car needs to be compliant so petrol basically. I was thinking a higher mileage 3, 5 or even 7 series but experience tells me they will likely be money pits, maybe an Audi? Any suggestions or thoughts gratefully received.

9 owners over 106k miles? That’s a lot!

Why not a petrol XF? You don't have to get the 5.0 V8. Alternatively, if you have the money, just pay the ULEZ, it'll probably come to less than buying a new car, even if you own it for the next 3 years.

Yes I'm starting to come round to that way of thinking, the XF is a known good car whereas anything I buy may not be. Hmmm

My advice would be to keep your beloved car and stay away from London.

Sadly whilst I can reduce visits I'll still be needing to go into the zone around 10 times a month which adds up

He is looking at a max spend of 9k. That won’t get you into a current shape car. In the original XF the petrol engines, especially the non v8 ones, are in short supply because they were pushing diesel heavily back then. Looking on autotrader there are 537 XF’s for sale in his price range and a grand total of 16 are non v8 petrols.

A handful of older diesels seem to show as ULEZ compliant for no apparent reason. I'm sure you've checked your reg already but if not it might be worth a look.

My 2008 Mercedes CLK320 CDI shows as being compliant on TfL's website despite being diesel and one year older than your Jag.

I'm after a four-door car so this evening I listed the CLK online for £3k. Truth be told I'd take £2k for it. It's probably older than what you're looking for but it's a lovely old thing to waft about in.

Lovely cars though, not for me though. Strange it comes up as compliant when from what I can it doesn't qualify

Am I crazy for considering this? I know it's high mileage but it's had a lot of the obvious work done recently.....

Decided to suck up the charge and stick with my XF after a nice drive in it today, it's such a good car and I've had all the obvious and usual stuff sorted. Might think again in a year or so when I'll be able to put a bit more cash into the exchange, make it more worthwhile. Thanks all for the time and expertise offered

I suspect you'll find it both cheaper and less stressful in the long run fella. I've see so many people throwing away perfectly good cars and spending thousands in the process. We've only got 251 working days in 2023 (excluding weekends and Bank Holidays) so i suspect you'll find it doesn't cost quite as much as you fear.

Thanks pal. If I had more money to put in to get a newer car it might be practical but who knows what I'd be walking into with my budget, and the Jag I have really is an excellent example and due to ULEZ etc I won't get as much for it as I should really

Good decision. It sounds like you'd regret selling it.
