There is an article in tonights local paper concerning the residents of Milborne St andrew in Dorset which is a village between Blandford and Dorchester which has the A354 runnung through it. There is a 30mph limit but residents are complaining that they cannot cross the road to go to the post office etc. and want to county council to installa Speed Indicator Device.
The council say they have no funding from central government and the residents will have to buy it themselves but the council will maintain it. The residents arn't happy and have taken to donning HV vests and pointing hair dryers at approaching motorists.
I may be missing something in my logic but if there is on average the same number of vehicles a day going through the village wouldn't it be better if the speed limit were increased? This would mean that a vehicle would be through the village in less time and therefore more times when no vehicles were there?

Surely if they can't cross the road, they need a bridge or a traffic light controlled crossing.

How come "speed" is seen as the cause?

Increasing the speed limit might well help too as you said because it might prevent the bunching.

But I'll tell you what's the right thing to do: get the crack team of government traffic planners headed up by Mr Safespeed to properly research the problem and come up with a scientific answer rather than let senile old gits stand about impersonating police officers.

Oh, silly me, there is no such department. Not yet anyhow...

supermono, the council didn't have any funding for a SID so the request for a controlled crossing was a non goer. There was of course no reference to the 'surplus' that went to Gordon Browm from the Dorset Camera Partnership. ( I am though not in favour of local road 'safety'measures being paid for from the surplus of the Camera Partnership. As the council is a member of the partnership there would be to much incentive for them to want stricter enforcements at the places where they know speed limits are to low for the road conditions).

That’s twisted logic. Sure the cars will be further apart, but on average they will still be the same time span apart, hence raising the limit would have no benefit. Furthermore, this would indeed reduce the level of bunching, but it would be at the determent of the villagers as they may have to wait longer for enough of a gap in the traffic before they can cross.

I don’t know the facts surrounding this road, but it does seem that pedestrian lights or a zebra crossing would be a good solution. Just how expensive can some paint, two poles and some flashing bulbs be?

I saw this article in the Metro this morning and it included the phrase "when drivers saw the yellow jackets and 'speed guns' they hit the brakes".

Two thought occurred to me: Is people 'hitting the brakes' in some way safer in their eyes, sounds like an accident waiting to happen. And how far is this away from impersonating a police officer?

It's not the cost of the paint, poles and flashing lights ... but the cost of the management time and contractors! - Streaky

Prosecution for impersonating a police officer?
