Looking for some input from anybody that’s perhaps been in a similar situation.

I’ve mostly driven semi-quick cars like Leon Cupra’s but the last 3 years I’ve gone between an Insignia estate, a Volvo S90 and now been in a 2020 V90 for a year.

Needed a barge due to 2 young kids, but they have now outgrown the need for prams etc so a V90 feels like overkill and I have the itch to get back into something a little nippier.

I do often get the bug to change car and can get into a 2020 golf R estate (I have a thing for estates, albeit this is a good bit smaller than a v90) for no additional cost as I’m being offered the same trade in for my car.

The v90 does everything I need it to and there’s nothing wrong with it but, going against the Volvo stereotype here, I find the seats to be absolutely atrocious. Every time I get into the car I feel I need to shift about for 10 minutes before I get comfortable and being the size of a boat, it’s quite uneconomical; which would be fine if it had a power output to match being so thirsty.

Not sure if I’m looking for someone to reply having been in the same situation with some guidance or for people to tell me otherwise.

Perhaps it’s a ‘grass is always greener’ situation and the power will lose its appeal and going back to crash suspension will be annoying. I know these cars are chalk and cheese and not exactly directly comparable.

Cheers.

The seats in my golf are the best I’ve had in any car, so easy to get a great driving position quickly with loads of adjustments to get it exactly right.

Previously I’ve had a Volvo V40 top spec with the adjustable electric seats but the golf beats that.

I find the golf to be a great all round car, not too big on the outside and with good interior space. Both quick and comfortable too.

I was going to get an Octavia VRS but actually went with a lower powered golf to get the more comfortable suspension and better fuel economy as with the heavy traffic the extra performance would be wasted sadly.

Also the crime locally is out of control so the R or a VRS would be a target.

With a 150hp 1.5 tsi dsg I’m getting 0-60 in 8,0-100 in 21 and also 45-50mpg over 22k+ miles.

One thing to consider, nobody is going to break in at 2am for the keys to your V90 but they might come for the Golf R. I nearly got one a few years ago and this was a consideration for me having two young kids in the house.

The Mrs and I have an XC90 and a Golf R estate so I get the logic. My only comments are that the boot on Golf estate is huge and if you can get a Golf with switchable dampers. Volvo make a great car but a Golf R estate is the best car in the world once you look at space/price/economy/traction/performance. Will get shot down for that!

I had a Golf R estate followed by. V90 CC T5. Both are good cars, the boot on the Golf has a multi height boot floor which is useful. The main advantage of the V90 was the rear legroom which meant that I never needed to move the seat from my favourite setting regardless of who was sitting behind me. If that isn’t an issue for you I would go for the Golf every time.

Not an issue. Two child seats in the back so no adults will be getting in behind me.

I can’t help on the car switch ( although do like the Golf R ) but in light of the multiple threads on Insurance costs it might be worth a quick check with your current Insurers just to see if that makes too unpalatable a £ cost.
