Heading to Zakynthos at the end of this week for two weeks with my two teenage girls (15 & 13), and looking for recommendations for things to keep them entertained, things to do in general, places to eat, etc etc.

I've searched the forum and there is a similar post from 2012, but i'm guessing things might have changed a bit since then.

We're staying in Kalamaki but have never been to Zante before.

Kalamaki is fine for a family holiday. Lots of perfectly good restaurants on the main strip. Started my love of Greek food in Kalamaki. Avoid "Greek nights" though as the restaurant will be full, you might get dragged up to dance, and the food will take forever

Take a boat trip to shipwreck beach as long as the sea state is calm. If not then you might not be able to land. If you have a car then it's worth the trip to see the beach from above. Be careful though its a long drop!

Do a turtle boat trip as well.

Keep the girls away from Laganas!

Morning bump!

We're hoping to get a week booked in Zante this year, we love the greek islands and never been to Zante so keen to explore.

Where is best to base ourselves? Ideally a villa with a pool, that we can walk to a few bars/restaurants and even a beach.

We'll be travelling with our four year old so ideally with a few things nearby to keep him entertained. The island aqua park looks good but worried he'll likely be too small for most of the slides.

Also interested as I'm taking the family (son 16 and daughter 14) there in July.

Have booked a 2 room apartment in Tsilivi for €1,000 for 12 nights.

Looking forward to it

I was really disappointed with stwreck Bay. A vandalised rusting hull of a ship and loads of tourist boats belching pollution into the sea, not quite the idyllic impression you get from the pics!

This was maybe 20 years ago, but I doubt it’s changed much…

Used to stay in tsilivi 30 years ago. It used to be lovely but like lots of places has been overdeveloped IMO.

We're thinking about Zante too. I did a lads trip to Laganas 10 years ago, definitely a party area of the island with clubs and bars all down the strip til 6/7AM, we wont be heading there this time.

Just wanted to add, if you've not already been, Kefalonia is a lovely island, me and OH went last year (40 and 33) to Skala and we absolutely loved it. We want to go back, but sadly seems a little pricier than last year, so may have to wait another year.

We went to Kefalonia last year and going again this year. It is a lovely island but definitely more expensive than some.
We also go to Crete twice a year and it’s cheaper than Kefalonia. I think it’s one of the best Greek Islands as there is so much to do and see and has small and large resorts as well as some nice towns. There is something for everyone and with two airports there is a bigger choice of flights.

Another vote for Crete here. Either the South West of the Island, or the East coast. Avoid the North Coast, it's a long way from being the best part of the Island. If you're hiring a car, then hire one near the airport. Don't do what I did last year and wait until we got to Paleochora before deciding that a car might be a nice idea. It was 3 times the price.

Haha, we were in Laganas when Greece won the Euros in 2004, tanks parading the streets and shotguns being fired by the bar owners.. brilliant break.

I had 20 euros on them to win at the illegal bookings that was masquerading as a natural sponge stall.

It rained so much over a day we were racing lilos down the hill on the strip all the way to the sea!

Happy days..

Family holiday however, kefalonia or lefkas on the Ionian side IMO.

Paralia Gerakas is a beach right on the south east tip. It’s a nature reserve where turtles lay eggs so doesn’t have any major draws - restaurants etc, but is quiet with a very calm sea. We went years back and remember thinking it’d be perfect for kids being shallow and calm. Quite a few nudists at one end, but perfectly fine elsewhere if that’s not your bag!

After a lot of to and fro-ing, we've ended up booking Corfu. We were quite restrained on days we could fly and the Corfu flights seemed to fit in better with airports etc. Will do Zante next time!
