I'm on the hunt for a horse towing steed and naturally the Range Rover immediately pips into the mind!

Strangely the other choice is an M 140!

Running costs aren't too much of a concern when considering fuel but paying £700 a year for tax irks me immensely!

So, high mileage aside,, need to run this for the next three years at around ten housed miles per year.

I suspect the other maintenance costs of the Rangerover for things that will inevitably break on a 14 year old car will make the annual VEL look fairly cheap to be honest

Are you looking at the 1 series to tow a horse box?

It’ll have to be for a Shetland pony box I reckon as the towing capacity is 1200kg for the 1 series

An M140 will not get a horse box across a weymt paddock. A Range Rover will.
Range rover also has fold down boot for putting on wellies etc.

Depending on how much you need to tow the QX70 could work for you & they're only £395 tax.

OP Id go for it - looks a really nice example

I bought one 18 months ago for 6K - did 11K miles in it with just a front shock airbag and a height sensor to change.

Turbos are done on yours so thats good - its a 3K job otherwise.

Other thing to check is the torque convertor - get it on a steep hill and check to make sure it doesnt judder as you go up the hill - otherwise its a torque convertor at 1K

Cant beat a Range Rover even this older car has a lovely interior , a nice place to be. That road tax however kills it.

As the OP is looking for something to tow a horse box I doubt dobbin will want towed at illegal speeds whilst hanging on to its hay basket due to G force.

Ontop of the annual VED, he'll need probably 300-500 a month for minor/various bills?

I'd rather talk you INTO a petrol supercharged model if running costs aren't an issue. A much safer buy by all accounts.

The tax on the Range Rover will likely be a week's depreciation or a few tanks of fuel, perhaps the value of the first breakdown.

It's such a small cost in the overall cost of running a car, I've never understood why people refuse to buy a car based on it.

If that's the car that ticks the boxes and you can afford it then buy it.

I found a 2008 range rover sport with decent condition, spec etc. but was a bit tatty and had clearly been neglected in the interior department. was only £9k mind you but i guess a 9 grand RRS with 100k miles could throw it's own toys out of the pram quickly.

See my garage on here for what you're likely to face with a cheap RRS - I bought the cheapest 3.0 TDV6 in the country at the time.... for the same reason as you as well. Much though they're a great vehicle when they work (and they tow really well) I can't recommend one.

Find yourself a Cayenne or a Landcruiser would be my recommendation.

All I'd say about running/repair costs is if your horse is a grand national winner, go for it!
