1. I currently lease a car and that is insured with tesco
2. The lease ends next March and the insurance renews in January
3. I am possibly buying a 2nd car today which I cannot add to my tesco policy
4. I understand from tesco that my no claims discount cannot be used on my second car

So my questions are.......

How do I best insure the potential new purchase ?

Will I be able to transfer my no claims discount when the lease car goes back in March ?

In effect, I will have two policies and one will only last two months after renewal in January

Any help, guidance etc would be useful

Thanks
Richard

1) leave the current lease car as is, and have no ncd on the 2nd car. Renew the lease one in Jan and cancel in march, transfer the ncd then
2)Transfer the ncd over from the lease car to the second car and impact the premium now. You probably need to research the premiums on that
3) multicar policy using one ncd
4) find someone that will mirror the ncd from the lease car to the 2nd car. They may want both policies mind
5) go to a broker and depending on vehicle value you might be eligible for an hnw policy as you don't mention vehicle values and ncd is not taken into account on them. Some will accrue it other won't. Likely to cost more but the benefits are bigger

Thank you Ninja for taking the time to answer this dilemma and you have drawn the same conclusions as me

I think option 1 seems to be the reality for me and deal with the other insurance in January as the lease car is worth more than the 2nd car

I never thought buying a 2nd car would make things so complicated but I do appreciate your answer !

When I first got a second car in 2014 I went to my local A Plan broker and they managed to find an insurer that would mirror my NCD on a 2nd car. smile

I've got full NCD on both now.

Now that's food for thought, thank you.

Each year my NCD goes up a level and the expected discount percentage should increase and yet my insurance premium is more expensive.

Don't focus so much on NCD and just find the best insurance quote for your circumstances and many online quotes will ask if you already have NCD on another vehicle and maybe they take that into account.

Once you have found the best quote you can then add on all the extras like legal protection, breakdown and courtesy car and you total cost will double again.

Speak to a broker rather than an online comparison. You should be able to mirror the NCD.

Speak to a decent broker, they may take the NCB into account.
Re the transfer after two months, I had a second family car insured with effectively no NCB. When I sold the first one which had full NCB I tried to swop over the NCB with Zenith and they were going to increase my premium!
Won't be using Zenith again

Most systems top out at 9 years. You could be 35 years accident free but max NCD will be 9 years.

In truth, the "discount" is applied up to 5 years - beyond that is usually immaterial/marginal.
