We have a metal scraping/squealing noise from the rear left wheel - sometimes goes away at higher speeds (40mph+), but is there pretty much all the time now at urban speeds, and especially loud in reverse.

Application of brake doesn't seem to affect it directly, only the slowing of the wheel, so I don't think it's something trapped in the brake pad.

I'll be taking it to a garage next week but just in case anyone has any ideas what it could be? Not sure why it would be so much louder in reverse.

Honda Jazz Mk2 2009.

Had this the other day, sounded godawful.

Was a piece of gravel caught between disc and backing plate. Cheapest repair ever.

Did it sound different in reverse?

'goes away above 40mph' 'mostly in reverse' Sounds like fun!

I'd say stone in, or rusty backing plate.

Discs and pads were changed a year ago.

Is the backing plate the thing that sits behind the disc, slightly larger than the disc?

If it’s a stone I wonder if I can shoogle it out with a stick or something thin but blunt.

Maybe very slightly. I know when i dug out the bit of gravel it was loose enough to move round but too big to get past the backing plate lip.

If you’re not averse to taking the wheel off and having a look it could be worth your time.

So this turned out to be a seized caliper - the pad was worn down to the metal so caught it just in time that the disc didn't need replacing, yet. Hellish noise while driving it to the garage on its final trip though! All good now.
