I guess the topic describes the issue.
My water temperature gauge drops from 80 to 45 on steep hills. Once on the flat it reverts to 80.
A sensor issue?
Any suggestions welcome.

Air in the system? Have you tried releasing the bleed clip and driving it for a while?

The gauge returns to normal.
Do these things have a normal thermostat?

Yes - only thing unusual about the cooling system is the large volume of coolant, given it has to loop right to the front of the car and the radiators there!

Hopefully someone more experienced can chip in - might be better of in the "Engines and drivetrain" forum, where most of the mechanical experts lurk

First thing to check would be the coolant level.

Second thing to look for would be the location of the sensor that drives the dashboard temp gauge. (Sometimes the ECU will use an engine mounted sensor, but the gauge uses one in the front radiator).

If it was in the radiator, or in an expansion tank, for example, the sensor could find itself sitting in air instead of coolant, as any air in the system rises to the highest point.
