well, not so much a shock as an unpleasant tingle.
Last year, Golf TDI with engine re-mapping module (somewhere between 185-200 BHP) £600 plus £90 weighting for the module being on.
Renewal has just come through - no claims/points/anything - and the quote is £870.
Rang them up, and they run it through again, and said that the module didn't actually make any difference.
Other insurers (got quotes online) come up with more or less the same.
Jesus!!!!
£850+ for a 37 year old, with full no claims, and 3 points, driving a diesel car.
What on earth is happening???

They seem to be starting to batter chip mods...

Is it a software upgrade or a physical change to the ECU?

It's a smallish box, about the size of an old computer modem, live and earth wires, then a 'Y' snake with female and male multipin connectors. One goes into the side of the engine block, the other mates with the connector that you've pulled out.
Increases torque to approx 270 lb/f (more than a Ferrari 360 I believe - it's already claimed one clutch) and BHP quoted as 185, though the same car with same mod on a rolling road came up with closer to 200 BHP.

Quite a bit out of a 1900 diesel.

Spins wheels in 1st 2nd and 3rd (sometimes)

They have to cover the cost of Katrina somehow ...

If the mods don't make any difference to the price it must be to do with location or profession I would have thought?

Should this be in General Gassing?

£870 is 3 times what I pay for an Audi TDI with 3 points SP30, so I would guess there is something you are not telling us, or live in high risk area with a high risk job.

It is probably the area you live and the type of car..Your area may have alot of claims and being a VW golf there are alot about so more chance of claims being made on them...
Still a shocking price though...I pay over £100 less than that on a 550bhp skyline gtr with the mods declared and I am a fair bit younger...
When any mods have been done you really need to call around to find anyone cheap, most of the big names run a mile at mods...Try some VW forums to see if there are any recommended insurers..

ahhh west yorkshire, that could be why. during term time my postcode is LS6, it literally doubles my premium. if you are anywhere near there it will have an effect.

West Yorkshire !!

Originating as I do from this very area, I can well understand as to why your car is so expensive to Insure (not to mention I also work in Insurance, though dont hold that against me).

All down to Claims experience Im afraid. Not only are a lot of cars stolen in that area, but in addition the instances of fraudulent claims is also wholly dispropotionate to the actual populace. Indeed, the so called "M62 triangle" is currently subject to an investigation by the Insurance Industry in its entirety due to the sheer volume of such fraudulent claims from multi occupied vehicles, hire cars being driven into hire cars, cars being brake tested etc etc.

Living as I do in the City Centre of Bradford though, you have my sympathy.
