One of the guys in the office has a 996 C4S... and it needs a new exhaust. He's heard my Chimaera and wants his to sound a little more  - does anyone do a Tubi style exhaust for the Porker... or what other options are there..?

TIA. :)

Hasn't the C4S already got a sports exhaust?

The ones I've heard sound bloody great.

It may do... but when mine is running next to it, he had to check he hadn't stalled..

I must admit I do find that unless I've started the car, it tends not to run...

Pushing aside the usual TVR "reliability" thing :rolleyes (it's been far more reliable than the old man's Boxster BTW) would you care to offer something useful in the way of a suggestion of a suitable exhaust for a 996 C4S..??

Find out if he has the PSE fitted (Porsche sports exhaust). It can be retrofitted and isn't too expensive. If you want the full PSE experience though, its about 3k to retrofit as you get a switch in the cabin that controls a bypass valve so you can keep it quiet when cruising or pulling in late at night, yet have the full flavour when you want it.

Its never going to sounds like a TVR though.

The other option is to remove the silencers and put straight through pipes on. Liable to get annoying after a while and you won't get on any trackdays.

The C4S didn't have a sports exhaust as standard. If the sports exhaust was specc'd it automatically cuts off at idling speeds.

Tubi do exhuasts for porsche, so do many many others. Depends just how loud he wants it, he could get a set of cup bypass pipes for around £400 but it would be very very loud. There are a million variations inbetween.

Get one fitted. The sound of a normally aspirated 996 with a PSE is truely unbelievable. Forget the switch though!

Agree with Wolfie - PSE but forget about the switch. Just get the exhaust plumbed in - any specialist will be able to do it - and get the valve permanently wired to the open position.

Wolfie - where in Warwicks are you?

Have the PSE on my 3.6 and it sounds fabulous!, the car is way too quiet as standard-get one fitted and then find some tunnels....

question re. PSE on a 996

what are the switch settings?

on = open only at higher revs / off = closed permanently

or

on = permanently open / open only at higher revs

hopefully the latter

With the switch fitted my understanding is as follows: You can choose between:

Off - car is permanently quieter as the internal flap/valve is closed

On - flap is opened via some sort of synchronisation with the throttle so under heavy foot you get the full monty loud experience. However, even with the switch set to on, at idle etc, the flap is closed.

If you wire the flap permanently open you get the full exhaust experience all the time. It sounds amazing starting up from cold and really burbles away even under small throttle inputs.

PSE does sound good (not in TVR sound quality/volume though ).
However, don't bother with switch. In addition to high cost of retro-fitting, the switched version runs more quiet between 20-40mph. This can be disabled, but again, Its more work.

Leamington Spa.

By default the PSE's exhaust baffles are open (noisy) so just fit it and be prepared for the crazy grin!!!!

The Fabspeed Supercup pipes on my 993 *did* sound like a decatted TVR, you most certainly can get monster lairy noise out of a 911!

The 996 will probably sound different but if you want big noise then Supercup style pipes (i.e. no silencer box) are the way to go. Useful weight saving as well.

thanks, surprises me as most 4S I have seen crawling by (ie valves closed) have still sounded great, must be unbelievable open on idle

A PSE equipped car will have the baffles open on tickover and anything below 30mph. Between 30-45mph the baffles get activated, above that the exhaust will be open. This is relayed controlled to pass European noise regs.

The switch will allow you to basically switch it off, not switch it permanently on....unless you do something to the relay
