Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG | Spotted

We'd never seen an engine like it in 2006; we'll likely never see one like it again

We all know the story of the latest Mercedes-AMG C63. The once mighty V8 super saloon/coupe/wagon dropping four of its cylinders in favour of an electric motor and battery. A very AMG 680hp (in the right conditions) has resulted, albeit with a not-so-AMG soundtrack. And while the 63 badge denotes that it’s the most potent C money can buy, it no longer bears any relevance to the powerplant lurking within.

The 63 designation was first introduced in 2006, when AMG fitted its new M156 V8 under the bonnet of the C209 CLK for the final few years of its life. While the car should have been labelled as a 62 for us, given the M156’s 6,208cc displacement, the car was badged a 6.3 as a nod to Mercedes’ first production V8: the M100. And we have in mind that some markets round up cubic capacity a bit more keenly, so it would have made sense. Perhaps. The 63 exists as the flagship AMG model, you know that, regardless of what's actually under the bonnet. In the years since 2006, moreover, some truly spectacular cars with the badge have been built.

It's little wonder Mercedes decided to pay respect to the M100 with the M156, because it was a proper beast of an engine back in the mid-2000s. While the CLK55 predecessor cranked out a respectable 362hp, the CLK63 brought a monumental leap in performance through good old fashioned displacement. No turbos, no supercharger. That’s 475hp at 6,800rpm and 465lb ft at 5,000rpm, both of which are pretty high compared to the instant power and torque available on today’s turbocharged motors (especially those with an electric component like the new C63), but that just gave drivers a reason to explore the upper echelons of the rev range and soak up that glorious noise while doing so.

That said, the CLK63 remained continental cruiser than B-road bruiser. For the best a CLK could get, you’d need to pay a sizeable premium for the achingly cool Black Series. Still do, in fact. So while critics noted the steering as having a decent amount of weight to it, don’t expect every imperfection of the road surface to be relayed to your fingertips. What it could do, however, was hold a drift without the stability control cutting in and spoiling all the fun. Merc’s nannying ESP system was heavily reworked for the 63, so when you hit the off button – it was properly off. That said, it would re-engage if you suddenly slammed on the brakes (the international sign for ‘oh crumbs’), while the traction control would keep a watchful eye to stop your skids from getting out of hand.

Truthfully, the CLK63 was a sizeable leap over the 55 and laid the foundation for the legendary W204 line of super Cs. But with the 63 arriving so close to the end of the C209 generation, and pricing firmly in Porsche 911 Carrera S territory, UK sales weren’t exactly stellar. HowManyLeft puts peak registrations at 82 during the final year of production in 2009, with only 47 remaining on the road today. And that makes this early example a rather rare find indeed.

Registered back in 2006 with a fully-loaded options list resulting in a cabin crammed with buttons – and that’s very much a good thing. It’s clocked 58,800 miles over the last 17 years, and it looks to have been serviced at Mercedes dealerships at various intervals throughout its life. It’s quite tempting at £18,950, isn’t it? Especially as it nabs you one of the most special engines to come out of Affalterbach, and one that we’re unlikely to see again.

Peak AMG - *the* AMG engine, small-ish and the 209 is a much prettier and rarer (in 63 trim) thing than it's successor.

I'm not sure if these had passed through the stage when they all seemed to have been owned by undesirables - are they okay now?

Despite the above article faux pas (I'm no Merc expert), that seems a lot of car for the cash?

Nice looking car, not overstyled, fussy or chintzy like most of todays Mercs. Assume that the VED is nigh on £700 though and i am just not prepared to pay the Exchequer that kind of money though if i lived in the Caliphate of Khan and he was my neighbour i would be sorely tempted to buy this.

Nice enough write up and a good spot.
I have a convertible clk63 which are the rarest variation as they only sold 20 convertibles apparently between 06 and 09.
Mine was the last convertible sold in 2009.
They really are not as you say a B road weapon but can cover ground effortlessly.
The convertible is a lovely drive on a sunny day, I still have a chuckle at the thought of AMG shoehorning that brilliant engine into this car.

Always had a soft spot for these, along with the W211 E63. They looked menacing but in a restrained way, no huge spoilers or pointy bits its just muscle.

The engine in this is one that I'd love to experience one day for sure. I reckon that if Merc had offered the V8 6.2 C63 with a manual gearbox I'd have definitely bought one of those instead of the manual V8 4.0 E92 M3 at the time.

The noise this engine makes is epic to my ears, plus it has a very nice amount of torque for an NA engine too I reckon. Unlike the fairly limp torque figure that is in the V8 M3 in comparison for example.

Based on what ?

Its a big N/A V8 in a RWD chassis from 2006, its not that complicated, no air or ABC suspension, its pretty simple, and most of it is likely standard CLK, so body, trim, suspension etc is available pretty cheaply. They dont seem to rust either.

We had a slightly neglected diesel one, same age and it was remarkably good, though not sure what almost 500 bhp would be like in it. Really loved that old thing, these 209 CLKs are a really good looking car. Think it was MNStewart on here who said that the 350 V6 (272 bhp) is the pick of the range having had the AMG, best balance between power, comfort and not scaring yourself.

Nice spot, looks a good price if it's in good condition.

Well, these should be checked carefully for rust, but the powertrain is probably more reliable than a typical turbodiesel of the same age, and the rest of the car is fairly average in maintenance terms, no air suspension or brake by wire on the C classes.

Good old brutes, these ones!
Always hated the infotainment with the blue graphics, which of course feels prehistoric now. But with that engine who cares?

My first thought was that it seemed a bit expensive given the age (granted this particular one is low miles). For the same money you could have a Bentley Continental around 1 year older. You could get a Jaguar XKR that's 3 years newer or there's a choice of BMW M5s around 6 years newer such as this one:

Still a lot of car for the money, but I suppose my point is for a big engined Merc, BMW, Jag, Audi etc around that price, i'd be expecting it to be post-2010 at least.

Had no idea they were so rare! Seems a bargain as well, although I'll probably change my mind when I start looking at what issues they had..

I've never been fond of the headlights on these, plus the interior looks ancient now(but granted it is of its time though). I personally prefer the more modern Merc interiors...but I appreciate that does seem to go against the grain though in fairness. Like the C63 though...these are all about the engine as you say for definite. smokin

Tame looking car by today's standards, almost to the point you could mistake that back end for being 'upbadged' despite the big exhausts. I like it.

I'm a big fan of this engine in most things though haha

Does seem that many of the AMGs of this era haven't done as M cars have, which is creep up and up in price. There are plenty of choices with that 6.2 V8 for £15-20k! smile

Whoops. My mistake, that's now corrected. Thanks!
