Best option for partners first car but also shared

Hey all
I am currently selling my M2 as i cant justify that performance on the public roads for the expense. My partner wants to start driving too having passed 6 years ago and not driven since.
I am looking for a stop gap car (for me) that we can share (so ideally not too girly), itll just go to the super market / gym and occasional motorway (1/2 a month). And itll become her car to build confidence in after i purchase whatever i decide to go to next. Though potentially i will continue to use it sometimes and get something less practical myself!
Whats the smart buy here? As i was considering an UP, which we used to have, but they are now 5k+ for a decent one, and im unsure its a wise purchase / overkill for her first car that will almost certainly be curbed or dented? Im struggling to work out a price point, that i would also want to use as an every-other-day run around.
Budget isnt a huge deal as i have circa 30k cash from the M2, but this is basically a first car question of do i spend 2-3k or 5k-10k...the car will do about 3-4k a year max
Currently looked at UP, older honda jazz, kia picantos etc

Similar to yourself I have an M2.
My wife passed her test about 3 years ago now. Her first car was a Peugeot 208 GTI and it been brilliant.
Coming from the M2 I don’t feel let down at all driving the 208GTI. Infact I’m debating trading the M2 in, running the 208GTI and getting a really tidy M5 next year.
Personally having that extra power is so much safer for a new driver as gives them confidence. Extra power in the brakes as well makes a huge difference for new drivers.

yeah i did debate spending 10k-15k on a more powerful nicer car, but it eats into the budget for my next car and she WILL damage whatever i buy that she drives so it feels stupid to spend more than necessary to get learning
these suggestions are all 8-10k range which is some 35% of the money from the M2 and hence from the budget of my next car! If i was going that route id probably get a GT86 for 15k but the budget has then tripled!

good to see it echo'd by 2 people, did you go hire miles? im unsure about the model to know about whats considered a reasonable investment round the 5k pointseems theres 2008 cars with 50k or 2013 with over 100k at the £5k price point

There might be other good options too- the 208gti is a good shout if you think she’d prefer the modern connectivity. That might buy you a few more years to save up the difference of buying the more expensive 208.
I’d also look at a Corsa VXR if your missus can handle the looks- that’s probably the most powerful/fastest car in this range pool I think.

It’s an NA engine at a time when it’s competitors were throwing out complicated things (thinking the twin charger Seat and Skoda engine), the Prince engine in Mini and before the Fiesta ST was released (the good one).

I make inconsistent auto decisions but haven't had breakdowns. So here are my thoughts:
- sub 5k it is more important to have fsh, ok mot history and warranty rather than brand and model
- reading between the lines you think smaller is cheaper; in general terms yes but now always. I wouldnt discount next segment
- one car that depreciates heavily relative to quality is the astra. People just hate vxh and you can get a lot of car for the money. Till you need to sell
- cars should be able to make 160k miles if maintained. With 3k/4k usage you can get a car for a long time. Also be very bored from it
