Which 80K 'keeper'?

I am about to sell a car, freeing up a space in my garage.

I'm planning to buy a 'peak petrol' sports car, very nearly new or actually new, to keep for 20+ years. It has to be practical enough to use every day, but it can be a 2-seater. It has to be OK in town and on motorways, and not be a nightmare with speedbumps or multistorey car parks.

Early contenders are Cayman GTS, Emira V6 and F-Type V8.....

Thoughts and suggestions please!

Depends on what you are after. Is it handling or engine or lightness or ...

The other consideration is about the length of time you intend to keep it. What is the longest you have kept a car before? 20 years is a lot! Most people get bored after a few years.

Brand new, it would be a Cayman GTS for me. Used, R8 V10 or AM Vantage would be interesting, but obviously older and higher mileage, particularly the former.

If looking at used

Aston 4.7 V8 Vantage, I think the V12's are out of budget, go manual as there won't be another one like it.

Jaguar F-Type V8 supercharged, don't know these cars that well but they look pretty and are are never coming back.

Audi R8 V10, again manual if you can find one.

Mercedes AMG GT/S/C depending on what available. They are all Auto, its one hell of a car and one hell of an engine but it is being replaced with another V8 coupe so not the final (ultimate) version??

Porsche Carrera GTS 911 991.1, manual if you can find one, the last N/A non GT 911.

Porsche Cayman GTS is good but with £80k I would be looking for a GT4 but it might be a bit hardcore? There is also the Gen 2 GT4 which will always be the ultimate Cayman?? Its also not a 911 if that bothers you?

Peak petrol for me would mean manual, which reduces the options

My first thought was the Emira, however, doesn't that go against your speedbump issue?

What about a BMW M2?

Nice choice to have. As mentioned, if you are a petrolhead, you will likely be itching to try something else after a few years. I'm hoping to have enjoyed both an F Type R and an Emira.

If it's one daily driver to last 20 years I guess it needs to be a Porsche, because of the build quality and usability, or maybe an AMG GT.

It's a fair point....have had my X5 >10years but that's more about being too tight to replace it!

GT4 a bit hard-core for me I think. Also doesn't seem to be on sale any more.

I hear you about Porsche. Cayman GTS is objectively the best choice.

Considered it.....I just don't think I want a 4-cyl. Appreciate that this might be illogical.

I wouldn’t get hung up on this. I was similar to you 2 years ago. Although I wasn’t bothered about practical. Just wanted a driving toy. I ended up with a new Exige. Yes I suppose it’s nice having a new car but it doesn’t make any difference. If I could of got what I wanted I’d of gone second hand.

BMW 440i. I bought a 440d version at the back end of last year. It does everything and you won’t go wrong with a 440i for the next 20 years.

Which do you want, peak petrol car or nearly new ?

IMHO nothing on sale new today would qualify as 'peak petrol' save perhaps a GMA T.33, which is a bit out of budget. So for me, peak petrol would mean looking back quite a way, probably towards 1990-2010 but with some leeway.

However 'peak petrol' is pretty subjective so your idea may vary (some people would rule out anything with fuel injection or PAS, for instance).


Of cars available new, a manual Supra would interest me, it's likely to actually last the 20 years too

I wanted the same thing and ended up with a lovely supercharged V8 F Type.

Thoroughly unreconstructed old school bruiser thats beautiful to look at and very easy to own.
