Chinese trade embago
Discussion
I was watching the news tonight and this embago came up again. It got me thinking. (not just how much I want to give Peter Mandleson a good hiding)
Does anyone else think it is extremely hypocritical of the government to stop these goods, which have been bought by companies in this country from coming into the Country when they just sat back and allowed all the call centres etc to be moved aboad? Surely this is essentially the same thing?
At least the Chinese goods are of reasonable quality unlike most of the call centres. Would it be better for the UK if call centres etc got tax incentives to stay over here?
Is this a comparable situation or is it going against the fair trade principals Blair and his cronies told us when the G8 summit was on?

It's a question of imports, not exports. The EU imposes a quota on imports to save its uncompetitive industries.
By contrast call centres are placed overseas by companies. The recipient country is happy for it to happen as it creates jobs and wealth there. The losers in the long term will be us.

Up until not many years ago all these products were being manufactured here.
The UK textile industry is allowed, even encouraged, to collapse, with the loss of thousands of jobs & manufacturing moves to low cost areas like China.
Why bother shutting the Stable door, the Horse is long gone.

Fair Trading?........
We can come back and talk about "fair trading" when the Chinese pay their workers properly, give them civilised conditions and hours of work, holidays, and provide public services for the nations workforce and rights has citizens etc...............
it's the lack of these things that enables them to undercut "civilised nations", forcing them to lose their industries and jobs.
Of course, the global capitalists who are driving this just LOVE it! more MOOLAH for them! and cheapjack wages for the rest all round.
What gets me is, when we, the down trodden poor, are all earning just £50 / month like the Chinese. Who is going to buy all those nice shiny new things in the shops?
Time for a rethink..........Mr right wing conservative!

Nah you will never make it to the shops the Lib dems and labour will have built so many congestion creating obstacles so they can introduce Kengestion charges everywhere. Shops will just close or move to areas where Conservatives are in control and build shops with car parks. Perhaps we could ask the Chinese to lend us their "Family Police" for our labour voters and we could lend them some of our civil servants to help update and modernise thier legislation

Hiya Nonners!........... Yes, as you say, unnecessary red tape is the thing that SHOULD be scrapped. I personally draw the line though at reducing the protective and safety legislation for our workers, I'm NOT prepared to lower standards here because some global capitalist somewhere is pushing the doors of free trade wide open instead of opening them slowly so that the least damage is done to the "established" western industries.

Typically Chinese businesses are private or even state owned and therefore do not need to adhere to Western corporate governance, legislation or the requirements of the SEC. Not being responsible to shareholders is also an advantage, for the time being anyway.
Piracy and counterfeit goods with a supply to a market tolerent of it means big businesses are building at a terrific speed. China is the financial super power of tomorrow and not just for cheap comsumer products.
Technology is a big play for them and in the next decade we will see China providing a much more significant number of companies in the Global 500.
