Over the past decade I’ve lived and worked in four countries. It was a bit more stable before that with 15 years in one place. Looking forward I am not really sure where we will be in five years. Still here? Back in the U.K.? A third country? Uncertain at the moment.

Although it is exciting and interesting to move around and have to adapt to change it is also unsettling too, especially for my wife.

Do you know where you will be in five or ten years? Do you have your life mapped out or life it day to day? Benefits and disadvantages of both approaches?

unless something goes horrifically wrong or i get very lucky, exactly where I am.

Bought out house as its big enough for anything we forsee and small enough to manage.

unless we win 7/8 figures on the lottery anything we'd want to move to would be completely unrealistic.

For the first time in my life, I'm not sure.

I'm late 30s now, stable(ish) job, my home is sufficient for the foreseeable, relationship fairly stable, etc. It's been bothering me a bit too to be honest, as I've always had a target to aim for and I've kind of not got one at the moment, other than just wealth accumulation and don't have any disasters I suppose.

I'm feeling slightly stagnant as though the story has already been written (shoutout to my deterministic universe bros who believe it already has!). I mean I know it hasn't as life can and will always throw surprises. Not that I want any, I just need something fresh and exciting to aim at. If/when my job falls through I might try a career change or living/working abroad.

Good question. In 5 years time:

My kids will be fully on the road to young adulthood and in all likelihood living their own lives somewhere.
Neither is the "I'll live in the next road to where I grew up" type and I can hear in their voices the call of the world. And I've encouraged it - go spread your wings and land somewhere you're happy.

My mortgage will be paid off in 5 years time. Got a house bigger than I need without the kids and mowing the lawn on a Sunday to then not then play "shots on goal" I find a bit demoralising - so like the idea of downsizing, leaving suburbia behind me to the next young family that want good access to our schools and getting money flowing downhill to the kids sooner rather than later to help them buy a place each.

I'm still progressing in a global industry I plan to stay in for as long as they'll have me hehe (and during the child-rearing years didn't take opps for international assignments that come up in order to have a stable family homelife).

I'm with a partner now, but not living together full time or muddling finances - I don't plan to change that set up with her and she's known that from the beginning.
Under the anonymity of a PH made up name, I can safely say in my heart of hearts she doesn't really factor much when I think about that next big chapter.
Not saying she couldn't be a long term fixture, but at the same time I wouldn't alter a big life decision if she didn't want to do it.
As nice as she is to spend time and go places with, life post-divorce has taught me there are simply plenty of fish in the sea.
And the flipside of that, if she wanted what I don't offer and left tomorrow to meet the other fish in the sea, then I'd wish her all the best and thanks for the great memories, it was a huge fun.

So yeah, I don't really know the answer, but the unknown and the ability to just say Yes to opportunities that come up is actually what excites me about 5 years time!

I will be where i will be.
What i mean by that is, nobody knows where they will be in 5 years time, we can sit here and say we will be doing this or that and living here or there but in reality, we don't know, so i will be where ever i am at that time.

Be kind of fun to look back in 5 years and see if anyone who said i will be doing a and b is actually doing that.

Well I think we’ll see what Bruce Willis has to say about that.

Assuming I am still alive, I should be living in this house but retired, thank goodness.

If you had asked me where I was going to be in five years and what I would be doing, five years ago, I would never have guessed correctly.

Would love the answer to be outside the U.K., somewhere warm but unfortunately the wife doesn’t share that desire so probably still here, doing the same as I am now.
