BMW Vision Neue Klasse heralds new EV era

Say goodbye to ghastly grilles, and hello virtual vents

BMW is going through a major change. You might have heard. We already know that the current M2 is going to be the last M car powered purely by internal combustion, and we also know Munich’s performance division is working on a fully electric model that’s due well before the end of the decade. But what comes after all the Ms, Xs and Series cars make the switch to battery power? Well, BMW reckons it’ll be something a bit like its new Vision Neue Klasse.

For starters, the firm has clearly softened its approach to vehicle styling, with the Neue Klasse iterating on the funky design language first seen on the i Vision Dee concept earlier this year. All the major BMW design cues are present, with the Hofmeister kink well and truly back after years of watering down, while the kidney ‘grilles’ are represented as two horizontal panels that simulate the depth of real vents. Meanwhile, the 21-inch wheels not only serve as a nod to BMW Motorsport wheels of old, but also help reduce drag. Granted, it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but we’ll take this over an XM any day. In fact, the company says the style incorporates ‘just a few distinctive lines’, a radical departure from pretty much everything to come out of Munich over the past few years.

Peeling back the ‘almost monolithic’ skin exposes all-new electric architecture and some mighty clever battery technology. BMW says it has developed a new sort of ‘round battery’ that is 20 per cent more efficient than the ‘prismatic cells’ found on current electric cars. This is said to improve charging speeds and range by 30 per cent. Beyond that, the company claims that it has optimised weight and rolling resisted, along with heat management, to help eke out more juice from the batteries to power its next-generation eDrive system.

Inside, the Neue Klasse is standard concept car fare, which is to say there’s a lot of cutting-edge tech on display that screams ‘embrace the future’. The big feature here is BMW’s new ‘Panoramic Vision’, which projects information into the driver’s sightline and, in an (alleged) industry first, right across the width of the windscreen. Both the driver and front passenger can interact with the virtual display, and it can be customised using the Neue Klasse’s large centre touchscreen.

It's here where things start to get a bit peculiar. In keeping with current EV trends, the Neue Klasse’s core interior settings are all accessed through the central tablet display. BMW says its ‘tried-and-tested’ Intelligent Personal Assistant will be on hand if talking at your car is something you’re comfortable with, though you can thankfully get by using the virtual buttons on the steering wheel or interacting directly with the screen. The whole system is powered by a new generation of iDrive, which gathers all sorts of data on the car and your driving habits to, ahem, bolster the ‘interaction between human and vehicle.’ Frankly, I’m not sure I’m ready for that sort of commitment.

Of course - just in case you couldn’t tell - the Neue Klasse itself isn’t destined for the production line. However, it does preview a new range of six EVs, ranging from saloons to SUVs, that'll launch over a 24-month period starting in 2025. “With the Neue Klasse, we have embarked on the biggest investment in the company’s history. We are not just writing the next chapter of BMW; we’re writing a whole new book. That’s why the Neue Klasse will certainly impact all model generations”, says company board member Frank Weber. Whatever gets us away from those monster grilles, Frank...

Their concept cars have been pretty good, just the production ones that have looked hideous. This one looks more italian to me, could be a new Lancia. Bring back the Hofmeister kink.

Agree, definite hints of Maserati BiTurbo / Alfa 155. No bad thing.

Reminds me of the old BiTurbo based Quattroporte...

BMW, like most of the mainstream car makers are slowly getting their pivot towards EVs to come good. Whether the demand will be there is another question.

You wonder whether Tesla will maintain it's lofty valuation in such a world.

I quite like it - a return to relatively crisp, clean lines and interesting proportions.

The exterior trim is awful. The interior looks like it's been designed for automatons.

But overall it looks vastly more appealing than anything they currently sell.

Looks good, but also looks a long, long way from being a production feasible, regulation meeting reality.

This is where BMW normally stuff it up.

Not an unpleasant thing to look at. Hopefully a pointer to a more elegant age.

Very cool looking thing. Please change design direction BMW, I don't want to look at your ugly cars anymore.

Aston Martin Taraf was my first thought from the side profile but I have no idea if that car itself had been largely inspired by what had gone before.

Lagonda if you insist on being pedantic.

Definite Alfa vibes. Better than anything they’ve ‘designed’ in years.
@bmw : try and stay away from the nostril enlarger on the computer program thanks.

Tacit acknowledgement of how influential the Tesla Model 3 has been - the interior, the glass area, the low scuttle. Even the switch from pouch to cylindrical cells.

It honestly looks like one of those toy cars which is just a plastic shell with stickers for the lights/grills.

While it's not as ugly as many of their more recent efforts, this doesn't look like a BMW at all, which is almost as bad, really.

Looks like a Fisker Karma.

Yup, that will do, I can see bits and bobs of the original Neue Klasse, if EVs can go down this road, it would be a nice road to travel.

4/5 very well done BMW. Keep up the effort! More work needed on interior daftness!

Hopefully production variants will be more useful and less willfully concept showy offy! Hints of 2002 and e21 in there. Also some nice nods to other cars like Alfa and Maserati which can’t be harmful! Future is t so horrid after all!

The front has vague similarities with the 1969 BMW 2800 Spicup by Bertone.
