London Underground - Travelcard vs Daily Cap

This may possibly be a stupid question but

London Zone 1 travelcard is approx £15.20
London Zone 1 daily cap is approx £8.10

Why would I buy a daily travelcard if the maximum I'm going to pay using contactless with a daily cap is £8.10?

Stupid system rather than stupid question but pretty much always more expensive

The only reason I can think of is that TFL would like to phase them out but someone somewhere would moan about it so gradually they will prove it's no longer a viable scheme due to low take up

I used to buy a Travel Card as part of my train ticket through the Corporate portal until I realised the cost difference. I pay contactless on Corporate Credit card instead now.

You wouldn't. TfL paper tickets have been made way more expensive than Oyster/Contactless to make them less attractive. Look at an example single fare in Zone 1, it's £2.70 contactless and £6.70 if you actually buy the ticket !!

The 8.10 cap covers zones 1 and 2.
The 15.20 travel card covers zones 1-4.

Even says there the Oyster or contactless are the best choice. I guess travelcards are meant for tourists or old giffers who don't do contactless.

I removed my previous post as I thought they'd actually binned off the zone only travelcards. They haven't!

OP don't buy one just use contacltess.

TfL really wants to get rid of paper tickets, but that's still a huge difference.

It seems to be partly explained by coverage. The £8.10 cap applies to Zones 1 and 2 only, but a £15.20 Anytime Travelcard also includes Zones 3 and 4.
