Which building society or bank has the best interest rate?

At, say, three levels, instant access, one month notice and one year notice. Preferably without having to have an account already with them.

Any suggestions?

This thread is good for pointing out latest instant access deals, such as current Santander one: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Other than that the likes of Money Saving Expert are worth watching.

The best accounts change virtually daily, and it's worth keeping an eye on existing instant access accounts for better options.

Finally just dumped my Marcus for the NS&I.

Didn't see the benefit of chasing fractions of a percent but 2% clear was worth a leap even on my meagre savings.
Have to tie for a year over east access but suited me.

Don’t forget Virgin Money Private Savings. They have a base rate tracker with instant access and pays up to 0.25% over base depending on balance.
