Insuring non-UK Drivers
Discussion
Interested in the answer to this as I’m going to have to swap my license for a Dutch one soon and they apparently invalidate my UK one and send it back to the DVLA. Only just occurred this might have knock on consequences for the cars I have in the UK that are still insured whilst I’m away, and also at renewal when it asked how long you’ve held a UK license for.

Is this true? I will be moving to the Netherlands soon and swapping for a Dutch license is on the agenda. A colleague of mine went - a Japanese license holder - and “swapped” his license but retained his Japanese one. The case in Japan is similar, I “converted” my license for a Japanese one but kept my U.K. one. If what you’re saying is true, I would use the Japanese license to exchange for a Dutch one. As far as the OP’s question is concerned. I insured someone with a Spanish license as a named driver on my U.K. car earlier in the year. I’m with 1st Central on that car.

See point 6 under This Is How It Works.
I don’t know if there is anything stopping you from doing the swap then reapplying for your UK license through DVLA. Suspect the DVLA probably do the same though.
ETA I’ve lived in several countries too and never had to lose my UK license to get the local one, but the Dutch seem to be very on top of this kind of thing.
