Am I right in thinking that my '94 993 C2 coupe has ABD ?
(I think ABD is Porsche's own traction control system.)
Is there a way I can tell if it does ?

The resaon I'm wondering is because sometimes, like just now, when I'm overtaking I'll accelerate and wait till the revs are right up to near red line in 2nd then pop it into 3rd to find the car backing off a little for a fraction of a second or so and then full power comes. Its like the clutch slips a little under full power just after engaging a gear.

Anyone know what's happening here ?

I took a Chinese colleague along who normally drives a Nissan Micra and hasn't had wide experience of fast cars back home. His body language was funny.. stiffening of torso and hand grasping for door handle. Comments after were along the lines of "Wow it accelerates fast" and "I was a little bit nervous for a while there".

I'm learning how to drive this thing now I think and compensating for its little twitches under power. Its great !

I think it's a slightly shagged clutch myself

Not sure they put ABD, PSC etc. on '94 cars. I may be wrong, and I hope I am for your sake, as clutches are always a grand or so when they go.

Apart from abs I am quite sure 993 didn't have any electronis aids..These came in with the first of 996 in '98..It would be very unlikely for this to come in on accelerating as I thought it was primarily brake linked anyhow...as Domster says could be clutch...could be misfire,,,try using optimax for a few miles to see if this makes any difference.

I sold Scottster his late '93 993 and according to the handbook I think ABD was an option even then. Don't ask me what it does though. I don't think it's the same as traction control or PSM.

993s definitely do have ABD, but I don't know which models it was standard on, or what year it started.

ABD is traction control, but it is not the same as PSM. It just uses the ABS sensors to detect a spinning wheel and brakes it.

Cheers guys
I am pretty sure I read somewhere that ABD was an option on 993s but as you say what year it was offered on I've no idea.
I think all 993 have anti lock brakes and (mine does anyway) and ABD is some sort of power / stability control thingumy.

As you say, its likely to be a shagged clutch...thousand quid
I wonder if somewhere in the documentation it will say exactly what options this particular car came with... ?
Oh well off to the OPC in Exeter this weekend then

PS I'm using optimax at the moment
(and it does seem to make the car run happier)

abd was an option when I bought a new 993 in 1996. I remember specifying it on my Carrera 2 tiptronic. It reduces wheel spin to the rear wheels when one loses grip abd aids stability in extreme situations, like when you're about to have a crash! Think I activated it once or twice.

I'd have though the easiest way to find out if you have traction control is to floor it in 1st and see if you get wheel spin? If you have a knackered clutch you'd probably just smell something burning

Okay,

993's were available with traction aids in the form of ABD, ABS and DDF. DDF is an LSD basically, ABS i don't think i need to explain.

ABD acts on the rear brakes, not the throttle, to slow down a spinning wheel. However, this only works at up to 44mph.

If you are getting a flat spot like you describe changing from second to third when "going some" then i'm sure you're well over 44mph at this gear change, so it can't be ABS/DDF/ABD.

I'd think sticky clutch release bearing, worn clutch friction plates, or an electrical anomaly related with the fuel cut off on overrun (like when you snap the throttle shut).

Hope this helps.
