I have a Hyundai i30 1.6 automatic. 5 or so years ago I was getting 36 mpg now getting 26 mpg. Long drives or short drives.
The computer reckons I should be getting 320 miles plus but says I am averaging 27 mpg.

The only thing I can think of is dirty injectors. I haven’t tried a cleaner yet, thinking of Wynns.

Is there anything else I should try.

E10 petrol is your likely culprit.
Try a tank of super 99ron and see if it makes a differenxe on your next long run.

I doubt those injector cleaner additives do all that much compared to a proper injector clean or replacement (if that is the problem)

It could be many things such as a blocked catalytic converter, something making it run very rich, a seized brake caliper or maybe a gearbox issue? Are there any Hyundai specialists that would know the marque or owners forums? It is amazing how much info can be held in a forum that main dealers may not even know.

Ah, that is a very good shout. The ecu may be adapting to the low octane / rubbish fuel. I wonder if it may need a few tanks to really show?

Do either of your rear wheels feel warm after a drive?

Rear wheels don’t feel warm. It’s not the fuel type, this changed 5 years ago.

Same for my Peugeot 107. Before E10 I was getting around 470 miles per tank, now it struggles to get over 400 miles. It’s E10 causing your issue.

So assuming all the usual filters have been changed in that time?

Does the car warm up correctly? Is the thermostat running cold for too long.

Filters would have been changed. How can you tell if the thermostat is running cold for too long?

What amazes me is whatever is causing this is constant, not getting worse sticking at 260 miles.

Do you know 100% that all filters have been changed? Or are you just believing what you’re told/reading?

Just do what has been said earlier: put a tank of V-Power in, preferably two tanks, then report back. That’ll probably do more cleaning than Wynn’s etc. and it’ll cost you about £10 more per tankful…

I had a sensor fail on a gti6 engine. It meant that the engine used the wrong map and was very jerky, it ran differently. You cannot tell a failed sensor without proper testing.

Are you sure it's not just a simple fuel leak?

E10 95 RON obviously isn't lower octane than E5 95 RON. They're both 95 RON. The E10 will contain slightly less energy than E5, but by the order of 1-2% rather than the 27% drop in economy you're seeing so if E10 is the reason, it's because your engine can't combust it cleanly for some reason.

I'd say a minor sensor or mechanical fault is far more likely. Trying a couple of tanks of E5 would be a cheap first thing to try, though.

Have you put on some weight recently? Accelerating those extra kilos costs fuel!

Have you had children recently? Those kids take 10 miles off your range every time they ask "Are we nearly there yet?"

Have you retired? You may not be doing those motorway miles any more. You'll get half the number of miles in town than you will on the 'bahn...

Has your car been in for a service recently? Perhaps the garage didn't adjust your handbrake shoes properly and they're dragging.

Have you started using air conditioning? That uses so much extra fuel that PHers are combusting at the idea that some people use A/C while their windows are open. So that extra fuel usage is apparently wasted.

Have you run anyone over recently? Those pesky grannies can get wedged under your car, again affecting your fuel consumption.

Have you moved to a mountainous location? You might think that the downhill sections will cancel out the uphill bits, but sadly it doesn't work like that.

Or maybe it's E10 petrol like everyone else suggested.

Probably worth replacing the thermostat just to rule it out.

"360/260 miles per tank"? Do you drive until you run out of fuel & the car stops?

I leave a few litres left in the tank, I confirm I have nearly emptied the tank by how much I refill it with.

Seems the thermostat only lasts about 10 years on average, so maybe it’s a good idea.
