I’ve just realised, to my horror, that the road tax on my wife’s car ran out 1st August. We definitely did not get the reminder form. Strange as we have owned this car and taxed it for years.
I very quickly taxed the car online, but of course it would start 1st September. A pop up came telling me all about driving an untaxed car etc, and said DVLA May be in touch. What will happen? Will we get a fine, or will we just have to pay the missing month, or both.

Pretty sure I read on here they've stopped issuing renewal reminders and now you have to sign up for that service? Odd as my dad's neighbour appeared at the door this weekend with his reminder, complaining because he thought he had SORN'd his truck months ago (he hadn't).

Anyway, to answer your question it is unlikely anything will happen. I imagine a couple thousand people do the same thing every month.

Not sure that’s right.
In the last month the reminders for both my daughters cars have landed on the doormat, no reminder has ever been signed up for. I know, I organise and pay for everything on both their cars.

Edit.
Looks like you can sign up for an electronic reminder in addition to the one that comes through the post

I didn't receive a reminder this year either! I discovered by chance a week and a half after it had lasped. I renewed straight away then got a 'red reminder' several days later

slight thread hijack...

presumably DVLA maintains records of the actual date that a vehicle is retrospectively taxed but does it share that info with other interested non-gov parties?

The great thing about a tax disk was that you had a visual note of the expiry date every time you got in the car. But that was too old-fashioned.

The other change for the worse was having to sell and then re-buy tax every time you change cars. It makes more admin for DVLA and the user pays twice for the same month.

Get the app "know your car" it's free and has all your info and sends reminders as well.

Quite a few people, including myself, didn't receive a reminder for 1st August VED renewal. There was a specific thread on it.

Happened to me a few years back on a motorbike that I was restoring, so not being used on the road but not SORN.

Didn't receive a reminder to tax, realised a few weeks after and so taxed online, only to receive a fine for no tax (the fine was more than the tax).

I'm convinced the whole SORN and tax system has been devised to catch people out, especially the non-transferable tax on sale where they, effectively get the tax revenue for the sale month twice.

Same as last year, I received a reminder in August which carried the threat of confiscation and crushing of my vehicle if I didn’t tax it.
yikes

Last year, I was caught unawares since I’d only just bought the car and didn’t realise this was necessary.
This year I went online and paid the £0 again for my Tesla.

Tax discs were a faff, much easier to write it on a calendar, I am old though and still have a calendar hung in the kitchen, with lots of other date reminders for a failing memory smile

"You cannot add digital tax reminders for your vehicles

You cannot have digital tax reminders for vehicles that are currently:

taxed by Direct Debit (your Direct Debit for vehicle tax will renew automatically when it's due to run out)
declared SORN
not taxed
in a certain tax class"

Well, 10 seconds a year to put the disk in the holder, terrible I agree. I too have a calendar in the kitchen but only because it has cats on it; it's too nice to scribble on!

I overlooked taxing my car recently and by the time I'd realised the MOT had also expired. It was less than a year since since I'd bought the car and I'd not yet remembered the dates. I MOT'd it and taxed it several weeks late. Nothing untoward has happened, nor would I expect it to.
