I have a Category S car, perfectly happy with it and expecting to run it until its legs fall off - except I suspect I'm being stung on the insurance. I think it's accepted that if you don't switch insurer they'll sting you for your laziness?

The GoCompare type sites which lubricate everyone else's insurance go like this,
  1. Fill in details
  2. Get a bunch of quotes
  3. Start trying to use the cheaper ones, and then right at the end of their information-sucking process they go "Oh, it's a write off. Our underwriters won't touch it" or similar.
  4. Give up and take the renewal at price offered. Start to suspect the only reason the other companies even bother to take my phone call is because the information they suck has some value to them.
So my choice of insurer is definitely reduced and I've stagnated with the AA pushing up premiums each year. Therefore I assume I am over-paying.

I've tried asking at them at the beginning of the information-sucking phone call, "do you insure Cat S" and they don't know, they just want to follow their script.

Can anyone recommend a broker or comparison site please? I have 10 years NCB.

This is a bit "again", sorry... rolleyes but I did read the old theads I could find, and I see

Find me one, just one, insurance company that will increase a premium for a CAT vehicle.

Here is Brentacre insurance talking about write offs. They share the same information that has been posted widely on the internet. Some insurance companies will not insure a previous write off and premiums are often higher.

It's understandable given how many are repaired badly on the cheap.

It will be conducted at the time of underwriting, if an insurer doesn’t/won’t insure Written off vehicles, they will just decline to quote. I’ve insured 3 written off cars over the years and never had an issue, but the insurer has always known the cars were CAT D before i told them. I actually once had a car that had been written off twice and still insured with no problems (see screenshot ... )

All quiet... did I ask in the wrong place? tumbleweed

Things have changed a bit and it's almost double last year. yikes

So they ask me for the value. Am I right in thinking that's not what they'll pay if it was written off, but it will affect when they charge me?

So I should use a recent webuyanycar valuation to see what they're likely to pay, and that might help if it's lower?

Then it might be time for the third party, fire & theft version.

Not the wrong place, but I doubt too many of the PH "powerfully built Company Directors" have that problem!

I may have a similar problem next April, although my car only became a Cat N thankfully after getting rear-ended 4 days after renewal in April! But I think valuing yours a bit above the WBAC figure would make sense as their valuation will reflect the Cat status, unless yours has had some repair work done.

TPF&T cover doesn't seem to exist any more sadly!

Stating the value on a standard insurance policy is mostly irrelevant, they will use market value in the event of a loss, which as you admit, will be less than a non-cat car. Only classic car policies with an 'agreed value' will guarantee a level of pay out.
