I really miss the pickled eggs you used to get in pubs up until about the late 80’s.

Nine of this white vinegar nonsense, just properly brown all the way through, and either served in one of those little fairy cake cup cases or even better in a bag of salt and vinegar crisps.

They don’t seem to exist anymore, even in chippies it’s all white vinegar.

I assume all I need to do is to take one of the many recipes using white vinegar and replace it with malt, and leave it longer?

As an aside, any other old school pub snacks you miss? Scampi fries (albeit more 80’s) etc? Sod foodie pubs with their proper meals, I’m talking booze absorbers of the old times.

There’s a micro pub , I think that’s the trendy description , that still serves them up the road from me , although they are in white vinegar .
It’s very rare someone orders one to go with their anything up to nine per cent beer !

I make homemade pickled eggs often, love them. I use different vinegars and spices and play around with flavors. My current favorite are quail eggs in my homemade cider vinegar. Could eat them like sweets.

Mmmm pickles.

You can still buy Scampi fries but I've not seen them in a pub for years. In my youth (90's), we used to get a jar of pickled cockles in the pub which again I've not seen in a pub for years. Very moreish after a few pints served with a cocktail stick.

My village pub serves pickled eggs in either a cupcake case or in a bag of crisps of your choosing. They are in white vinegar, which I'm fine with. They also sell packets of pork scratchings and packets of nuts, as well as the more 'modern' offerings such as olives etc.

Being someone who likes 'pub snacks' from time to time, I went on Amazon and ordered a selection of pork scratchings and mini packets of peanuts, etc, and keep them in my cupboard for when I have friends round. I also have a large jar of pickled eggs which I make myself (white vinegar). The pub snacks go down surprising well with friends after a few drinks!

Go on Amazon and search for 'pub snacks' and you can buy the proper carded packets of snacks like you get in the oub.

Indeed you can. I built a bar in the garden for a bit of fun this summer, they were on of the first purchases.

I might get a jar of pickled eggs now…..

The Retreat pub in Reading (old skool backstreet boozer) has a famous Pickled Onion competition.

https://www.theretreat.pub/pickled-onion-contest/

Kate Winslett's mum used to win it nearly every year until she passed away in 2018

Does my memory serve me (I guess I'm getting old) that there used to be a picture of a scantily clad lady on the cardboard behind the scampi fries and bacon things? Slowly revealed as each bag was removed?

I opened this thread to ask exactly that!

Thought it might've been a false memory.
I'm sure you're right, KP salted peanuts used to have those cards.

Scampi fries are still a thing in pubs, although not as common as they once were. My wife loves them so I always look. Ditto bacon fries.

My mum and aunt always used to make jars of pickled eggs in proper vinegar. I have good memories of my mum coming home from working at Tesco on a Friday night. We'd all sit around and watch The Fast Show, HIGNFY and those types of shows. Always with a bag of ready salted and a picked egg.

Might be on my own here...

Used to go drinking in various WMC in my youth(cheap beer) before hitting the main pubs

We'd often see Mr Cockle come round in his white coat and whicker basket with various small trays of assorted sea food, prawns, winkles etc

Beer and seafood was a great combination, but make you had a mint afterwards if chasing the ladies

The Royal Oak Lavington did that last time I dropped in. Also our pub has changed hands recently and the new owners do that on Sundays.
Crunchy and yummy.

I loved pickled things, e.g. pickled onions, cabbage, kimchi, sauerkraut, peppers, jalapenos etc. but the thought of a pickled egg just doesn't appeal to me.

Nope not a false memory but i think political correctness got in the way.
