Fuel crisis pending?
Discussion
As I recall, a few years ago the UK fuel crisis was primarily caused by 'panic buying' rather than the blockading of lorries.
Currently:
1) The cost of oil is at an all time high.
2) The EU has agreed to send emergency supplies to the USA.
3) The recent hurricane has knocked out a few refineries in the Gulf of Mexico.
4) Saudi is operating fully, but can't keep up with demand.
I can't help wondering whether this could create some 'panic buying', resulting in something very unpleasant to your average motorist.

LALALALALALALALALA I'm not listening, my head is firmly in the sand.
I can’t believe it but I’m sure it is going to happen. As with most PH’ers I am totally p’ed off with being raped every time I go to the pumps.
A few years go the price of crude was dropping but the price of fuel was going up. I therefore enquired of one of the major oil co’s why this was and was given the answer that it was due to the fact that crude is bought as futures, 12-24 mths in advance. Furry muff I said, not happy, but sounds logical. 12-24 mths later did the price drop? Did it
.
Okay so I know that companies are not charities but as one wise lady once said. “I have never complained if someone wants to make love to me. It’s when they try to
me I get annoyed.”
I also accept that 80%, or something like that, is robbed off us by GB and his band of muggers so they should be able to afford to drop the level of fuel tax and still receive the same revenue as they had originally projected but are they doing so? Are they
.
Finally. I am not a totally cold and callous b’stard and a lot of my thoughts are with the people directly affected by Katrina but… Why hell is the EU sending precious reserves of oil to what is arguably the richest, most self sufficient country in the world. Granted they need all the trained people they can lay their hands on to help and specialist equipment but we ‘anit exactly talking about Botswana here. I’m sure they have the capacity to source their own supplies of oil rather than the EU give away what little it has.
Yes their production capacity has been damaged but that just means that they are going to be trying to buy more on the world market and pushing prices further up causing us even more grief.
I realise I’m ranting a bit and liable to get flamed but we have to apply a bit of logic and common sense to all this. Would you jump into shark infested waters with no visible means of escape, with a cut on your arm, to help your neighbour whose dingy is floating out to sea?

Just popped to Sainsbury to fill up the Megane, it was absolutely packed and they had security guard on duty outside the shop standing in that sort of nighthclub bouncer hands neatly folded ( I will kick your head in if there's trouble ) type stance...never seen that before.
I note that the media is not yet reporting much about the fuel impact, the good old Beeb is very much sticking to the human cost story.
I lucky at least as I can always cycle/ run to work, it's only 4 miles away.

The US has its strategic reserve for emergencies (though mostly its for war)
I shall be running a mixture of toluene and xylene with a nice octane number which I can get for about 65p per litre. Shame the lead response is crap though, will still be running lots of it to keep my valve seats intact and keep the old detonation under control.
I'm not about to tell you where I get this stuff from as a new sort of panic buying could see the supplies of that dwindling.

I'm just filling up whenever I drive past Sainsburys, which will be twice today, twice tomorrow, probably twice on Sunday too
Mmmmm, cheapy petrol, especially if you get £50 of shopping, then it's only 87.9 for Super
Might even go as far as "emergency" petrol stored in a few 5 gallon drums

A taxi driver in Derby tried that one last time....
Ananova quote:
Petrol-hoarding taxi driver faces jail
A Derby taxi driver, who hoarded petrol in his home during the fuel crisis, has been warned he could be jailed.
The petrol leaked from Saqib Bashir's house and dozens of homes were evacuated for fear of an explosion. The clean-up operation cost Derby City Council £130,000.
He admitted four charges of unlawful storage of petrol and one of failing in his duty of care under health and safety laws. The case has been adjourned until April 4 for reports.
At Derby Crown Court, Judge John Wait told 28-year-old Bashir, who appeared physically unwell in the dock: "You have been committed to this court for a series of serious offences. I am bound to consider a custodial sentence."
Richard Thatcher, prosecuting on behalf of Derby City Council's trading standards department, told the court Bashir faced a maximum two years imprisonment and an unlimited fine for one of the offences - keeping petrol without a licence.
David Leathley, defending Bashir, said his client had been badly affected by the court proceedings and had been "submitted to hospital for three days as he was suffering from depression".
In what magistrates in Derby described as an act of gross stupidity, he stored the petrol in three containers at a house in Porter Road in the city.
But fuel melted the bottom of a plastic dustbin and leaked into the house last September, causing dozens of homes to be evacuated for fear of an explosion.
Last month's magistrate hearing heard that Bashir, of Richmond Road, hoarded the petrol to "ensure a continuity of supply" in order to safeguard his livelihood.

That's cheap I just forked out 101.9 for Ultimate in Reading

As an American, I don't see any reason why we need to be getting emergency fuel supplies... Prior to this, people were bitching when they had to pay $2.50 per gallon which, on a worldwide scale, is next to nothing. And, there are pretty much two types of people here complaining about higher fuel prices (now hitting a whopping $3 per gallon): people driving SUVs, and 16 year olds who can barely afford their vehicles, much less the fuel for them.
Personally, I figured the day was inevitable when I would be paying $5 or more per gallon, due either to rising crude prices, or the fact that American politicians don't know what a "budget" is. At any rate, driving is important to me, and so I'm willing to pay the price to drive. Those who are not willing to pay... well, then they shouldn't be driving.
It also irks me that we're now opening up the strategic oil reserves. I always thought that the point of that, as mentioned earlier, was for military purposes, and really for when we have next to no other oil imports to the country, and are thus forced to be self-sufficient. Not to ease the fuel prices so that every teenager with a riced out Civic can afford to ferry his friends to every crackhouse in his city. What will happen if we lose 2/3 or more of this reserve so that Bush can look better, and then all of a sudden we find a real reason to go to war? We'd be quite screwed.
