I realise there is a significant overlap with psychedelia and space rock, but I’m trying to define the undefinable, so all contributions welcome.

I’ll start with Cocteau Twins - Cherry Coloured Funk (described by Perry Farrell in todays Guardian as a band where every song sounds like an orgasm).

One of my favourite genres although I (probably like the OP) have no idea how to search for songs that fit in.....

How about -
Felt - Primitive Painters
This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren
Joy Division - Atmosphere

Have you heard any Gypsy and the Cat? Think they fit within this category.

Their new one, Dust, I think is lovely:

Not as good as this one though:

Most of Spooky - Gargantuan.

Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin are good options.

An acquired taste but I can always lose myself in Radioheads alternate take on ethereal and haunting..

Goldfrapp - Utopia
Sigus Ros - Agaetis Byrjun (although all of their music would fit the bill)
Axel Flovent - Driving Hours
