During a long run in the rain last week, the thermostatic switch for the fans packed up preventing the fans from stopping.
I bought a new switch from the dealership and installed it. What bothers me a bit now is that the fans kick in as soon as the water temperature reaches 70 degrees whereas with the old switch they only came on at 85 degrees. What is the normal temperature that the fans are supposed to kick in?
Cheers Andy

On start up I believe that fans are supposed to kick in at a lower temp first time around. Is it constantly kicking in at this lower temp?

Sounds as if you have a 70 ish degree one that is designed to come on when water starts to flow through the rad.

I had a new one fitted recently and noticed this lower temp as well. Kept meaning to check if it was a fault or the wrong spec part. Turned it to an advanatage in that when it comes on it coincides with the oil temp reaching warm so I have hooked this into the Mod wise two speed fan kit that I have been trying to get working and have used a second variable sensor to set the full speed. There are two LEDS on the steering wheel cover that come one. 1 for 70 and 2 for full speed at just below 90. Actually works well and I keep the revs down until I get green for go. The half speed fans then do a good job of circulating the air and in particular keeping the air intake and air flow cool.

As a result, I haven't changed it.

ok Steve, so when do you come over to Switzerland to fit me your 2 speed fan kit?

One thing I did notice though is that the old switch had a flat surface on the inside and the new one has some kind of a "button" like shape?

Well in the first place it's David Beer(Mod-wise)'s kit. I'm sure he could supply the bits to copy my mod which is in fact the same except I'm using the otter switch to control the half speed and the variable switch for the full speed insteaed of the other way round.

As for the different shapes... no idea.
