Should I replace MK5 GTI with a MK7?

I currently have a cheap MK5 GTI as a runabout and it serves this purpose just fine. I've been casually looking at MK7 GTI prices and am seriously considering upgrading to one. Alternatively, looking at MK3 Octavia RS's (estate/wagon).

The positives for me are better fuel economy, more modern features. Currently bone stock, I do like how the MK5 drives and handles.

Will this be a mistake?

I can't really see any downsides, other than having to spend more money to get into one. The MK5 might be a bit more fun, but I don't think there will really be much in it tbh.

Not at all - Mk7 is better in most / all apsects.

I had a manual mk7 GTI with the performance pack. Was a great car.

If you can stretch to a mk7.5 I would (I now have a mk7.5 r), the interior upgrades make it feel more modern inside

I loved my Mk7 GTI.

Was a noticeable step up over the Mk5 which is to be expected.

So easy to remap as well with Revo/APR realistically a MK7 is a 300+bhp.

I’m specifically looking at the ‘vanilla’ GTI as the Performance Pack models (it was a separate trim spec in Australia) creep into Golf R pricing.

It's a safe swap .... now if you were thinking of the Mk8 that would be a different story.

I really enjoyed my GTI and held onto it for years. I don't think you'll go wrong moving to a Mk7. Recently sold mine to Cazoo if you're interested.

Yes, I used to have a Golf R as my fun car but replaced it with a M140i. I much prefer the Golf as a daily as it’s a lot more practical compared to a 1 series, but not as fun. I imagine a GTI being FWD will be a bit more engaging compared to my old R.

A cheap 7GTI and M140i would be a good combo for me.
