After much discussion between myself and Mrs XXPLOD, I have chosen the spec for the Cayman. Went for Atlas Grey metallic with ocean blue full leather. Bose stereo, rear wash wipe and climate control.

I should get it in January. I'm told that if you put a deposit down now, the waiting list is circa 9 months. Looking as if the waiting list will grow to 12+ months by the time the car is launched in November. Anyone heard different estimates?

A few years back when the Boxster S was due to come out, the waiting list was 12 months. However, I placed an order with an OPC in Germany for a UK spec C16 car and it was only 8 months

The Coppering business in 'stoke must be good!

Excellent! Sounds great.

The wait on my Box S was supposed to be nine months. Got it in more like six. They *love* to talk up the long wait times to help get you to buy the (twice the margin) nearly new jobbies...

Don't suppose you want to bring your current steed on a day out this Sunday? Pie On The Beach 4 is on...

Well, what happened was that I ordered in Germany instead so the UK OPC lost out. Interestingly enough, after about 3 months waiting time, the German OPC contacted me telling me there was a delay taking the waiting time to 9 months in total. The sales guy then continued to apologised and reduced the £3000 mark up cost for RHD to £1000.

Now that's what I call service!

Do you have to pay for the full leather then? I thought that was part of the standard spec?

You get leather seats as standard, the 'full leather' extends it to the door cappings, dash, gearbox surround, steering wheel, cheers Geoff (smiling to himself)

I honestly can't believe the waiting list is 9 months to a year, so far it's one of Porsche's worst selling cars on orders alone. When it is released I'll be surprised if you can't just walk in off the street and pick one up with no wait!

I'm hearing more and more stories of people taking back their deposits based on the looks, the lack of performance options on launch and the hyped-up 'build' dates.

What are you comparing this to? The Cayman is for more of a niche market than the Boxster was pre-launch and new-model 911s will always have a long speculative waiting list.

What lack of performance options on launch?

Let's see what happens after the Frankfurt show, when all the magazines publish their first drive stories...

Hello there, new member here so be gentle

Just out of interest how much will the total cost be with the options you have selected?

I myself was interested in the Cayman and have since put a £3k deposit down for a Porsche pending launch - but not so sure after learning it only has 295bhp, and it also weighs more than the Boxster S, plus the £44k price tag, a 996 GT3 Mk1 would sound the more sensible option IMO.

My options cost roughly:

Metallic paint: £600
Climate Upgrade: £300
Full leather: £1000
Wash wipe: £250
Bose: £800

All-in my car just topped £47K.

Power/torque upgrade compared to Boxster S - similar to what X51 option does to a 911

LSD - true, but this isn't exactly a very common option for the 911

PSE - doesn't improve performance. Discussion so far seems to indicate that the standard Cayman exhaust may be quite loud, anyway.

You do have the choice of PASM, SCP, PCCB, full range of seats...

You really had me worried for a moment, I thought you say "Cayenne", gulp. However, "Cayman" puts a smile on my face, yes, even a dyed in the wool front engine wasserpumper guy can learn to love a Cayman. They are good looking cars and they're sure to perform very well too.

Congrats, Dogsharks

A GT3 is a different type of car though.

Personally I don't think 295 is too bad at that price. I was tempted to go for one of these instead of a GT3 until I just thought sod it and got the right GT3... an RS.

In the end though, GT3s are compromised for road usage. The cayman won't be. It'll be compromised for track usage instead!

I can't express how much I love my RS though. As long as you aren't on an awful B road its just fabulous in every way. So tactile and responsive.

Er... sorry for the thread drift!

£250 for a rear wiper?

Are you sure you need it?

In my day (well, when the 944 was current) this was free. And is only ever used in heavy traffic- above about 50mph the rear screen cleans itself. Many people remove it and save weight. Do you need it?

My intention was to purchase a 997 when I put my deposit down but deverted my attentions to the 996. However I was intrigued with the Cayman S and thought l could save a bit of money if l went for one instead. However, as 996 TT/GT3 mk1 are close to the low £50k these days you'd be daft not to consider these over the Cayman S.

When the push comes to the shove, as l've hankered after a 911 as long as l remember, l'd be happy with the Cayman initially then that feeling: "l just wished l got the 911" will surface. Why delay the inevitable?

I must admit I thought £250 for a wiper was a bit off, but then the salesman pointed out that reversing in the pissing rain can be something of a pain if you can't see! I do think it should be a no-cost option though.
He tied to sell me the parkig sensors! If you can't park a car the size of a Cayman, you simply should not be driving!
