Hi guys, I recently asked on here about the Audi tt, if it would be a good car to get and get rid of my first car. I’m at the point where I am going with a tt but was wondering if anyone could help me. There are a lot of different versions of the mark 2 tt tdi, tfsi, s line, etc. I’ve only been driving one year and have 1 year ncd. The tdi is the lowest insurance group(26) however I’ve always hated how diesel cars sound. The tdi s and tfsi are both group 31/32. I would love an automatic tfsi. Essentially what I’m wondering is what you guys would do in my situation with the options. I’ve got 5k to spend with and extra 2.5k I was keeping for insurance.

If you’re expecting to pay £2.5k on insurance my advice would be to wait for another years NCD then look

If you haven't already it may be worth punching some plates into compare the market for cars around 6-7k. I wouldn't be in a hurry to put 2.5k down on insurance on your second car, especially not on a car that costs half that. I'm assuming you have done this of course, if not you may actually get insurance cheaper than you think.

On what TT? 2.0 TFSI probably at that price range.

Any good compare websites you know? I put a plate of a tsfi in a while ago came to the cheapest 3.3k

If you have no luck with getting TT insurance in budget, try running the Peugeot RCZ, Chrysler Crossfire, Alfa Brera and Laguna Coupe through.

Alternatively Hyundai Coupe is a fair bit cheaper to insure.

Mini coupe cooper S was very cheap on insurance for me, but I am old… even so it was a couple hundred cheaper than equivalent audi TT. Performance not far behind either

With the mk2 it's either the 2.0 petrol or 2.0 diesel. I don't think the diesel is bad but if you really want petrol I'd go for that despite a few quid on insurance.

However, if I was spending 5k or less on a TT I'd definitely get a mk1 rather than a mk2. Neither are the best cars to drive but the mk1 is cooler and is heading for classic status. Your money will also buy you a really tidy, well cared for one especially if you go for the 2wd 180bhp model.

There are cheaper ones than that too.

I don't think you'd lose much over 3 years.

Really appreciate that plus that mark 1 looks great with low miles however my dad is helping me find the car (not buy it 💀) and I think we want as new as I can get so probably 2010 onwards as he’s quite cautious of the car breaking down (he stopped me buying a 986 boxster due to this) and he seems to be really on board with the mark 2 tt. Like you said if I really want petrol which I do I should get one, I probably wouldn’t want to pay more than £500 more on insurance for petrol than diesel.

Was looking at them, would love to have one but the fact that it’s only 2 seater throws me off

I think you'll struggle to get a 2010 mk2 for £5k unless it's done well over 100k miles.

Here's the nicest I can see

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2023091118...

Private sale so no guarantees.

If you want an auto and quattro you'd probably need a budget stretch.

IMO a good mk1 is no more likely to break down than a mk2. Even a 2010 car is now 13 years old so anything can happen. I've no personal experience but would think the older 1.8 is a much simpler engine than the 2.0tfsi so might actually be more reliable? I'm sure others will know.

Google and pretty much use them all. Go Compare, Compare the market are 2 the most common ones.

You must either be really young or live in a really awful area to get insurance at 3.3k for a 15 year old car.

And you think an Audi TT will take more than two people, think again and definitely look at one first. The rear seats in the Audi TT are purely for show and shopping, ask me how I know.

I know, I’ve seen the seats there’s enough room for a legless child maybe, but I have a mini one atm and it’s very limited with room as well, it’s more the option of being able to squeeze people in legally rather than not being able to have 4 people in the car at all. The people in the back will obviously suffer but it’s only my mates who will be back there

You won't fit your mates in lol. The people in all seats will suffer. If you have ever driven a small hatchback with a child in the back kicking your seat imagine what it will be like with someones knees right up your backside for the entire drive. That's assuming they can even fit their legs in with the require leg room for the driver to not be up against the wheel.

There is a good reason a rear seat delete kit is so popular among early TT fans and it's not to save weight...

With your £5k budget and expensive insurance, will you be able to cover the much higher run costs compared to your current Mini? At this end of the market, age and mileages that most cars you’ll see probably need new rubber, new brake and discs, new suspension components, new timing chain or all/combination of the above.

As someone said earlier take a look at the RCZ GT tdi (the difference in sound between the petrol & diesel is minor on both the TT & RCZ) they're a good car & normally come beck with sensible insurance numbers.

I know we're talking about a Mk2, but me and a mate tried to get in the back of a Mk1 once. OK, I'll grant you, neither of us are small lads, although neither are we particularly big either, and we're not the most flexible, but... simply no chance. The other mate did eventually get in (I had to wait to be collected by another mate), but he had to lie down on the rear seat and he was absolutely not repeating that experience ever again hehe

The issue with the TT rear seats is less to do with legroom than headroom. I seem to recall there is a height limit in the rear seats of about 5ft as any taller and you risk head injury if you are in the rear in an accident/someone closes the rear hatch when you are in the back. It is possible to sit sideways with your head cranked over but you can only get one person in then. Really only suitable for children/small people.

I had two adults in the back of a (1989) 911 once, for a journey of about 20 miles - so I'm sure it would be possible in the TT, even if it was very uncomfortable, and the front seats were fully forward.

Admittedly, neither of them ever asked for a lift again......
