Speed bumps were installed in the road last week but residents say the noise and pollution is as bad as ever.
Seriously, WTF did they expect?

Does braking then accelerating use up less fuel?

Is the noise of an accelerating engine quieter than one maintaining a steady 30mph?

The trouble is, it's only the truly thick who think these bumps (and other speed control devices) actually work. ...but it's when they experience it first hand that I have to

A while ago I did go through a phase of wondering why so many people were buying 4x4 vehicles. I'm not against them, I just preferred sports cars.

Now after a couple of years of having to drive low slung sports cars over speed bumps that resemble small walls, I realise a 4x4 is a perfectly sensible choice for city driving.

And to think that when the anti car movement want rid of 4x4's, they are actually doing something significant to encourage them!

Solutions to the problem for residents:
1. Get better windows/doors
2. Move house

Problem solved

I thought speed bumps were installed for the convinience of residents and at their request i.e. to stop speeding and protect their children etc. I mean a speed bump in London is not going to do anything for me in Dorset. If the redidents arn't happy with them then what is the point, surely they were asked if they wanted them?

Oh well all that red paint, 30 signs painted on the road and 30 limits starting a mile outside a village, as in Dorset, is all a waste of time.

The roads around where I work has just had speed bumps layed down to slow cars trying to get into the industrial estate. The problem is they are the kind that you can drive between, and there are normally parked cars on both sides as well...

...No probem doing the speed limit in my low car ^_^

I read elsewhere on here that they mustn't slow you down below the speed limit otherwise it's obstruction of the highway. So for 99% of us they are a waste of time and an inconvenience. No wonder we speed up in between them.

Um ... sorry whats wrong with "rat runs"?

Wouldn't we ALL use a road that cut out having to go through the city centre?!

Rat runs are great, they're the only option when some idiot has engineered congestion in the main roads.

Nothing.

If they don't like living on a through-road why don't they buy property in a cul de sac? Maybe because they like the convenience of being on a route that allows easy transit to places of work but don't want anyone else to use it.

The people living along them don't want you to drive down "their" road even though they'll want to be free to drive along "your" road for the duration.

Couldn't agree more. (I live in a cul-de-sac ) Near where I live we have road which is only ever really used as a rat-run when the the neighbouring main roads have works on them, but the nimbys living it have gone to major lengths to stop people driving up it when that is the case. (Even to the extent to having the council put "road closed except for access" signs up) They have also had bumps put in (which must have made things much worse). The thing that takes the biscuit though is that the leading nimby owns a large van which the tt parks on the outside of a sharp bend in said road (half on the pavement) causing a major hazard, about which nothing has ever been done! I was very amused when someone drove a truck into it though!

ive had to have my s4 raised just to get away from my house which now means crawling over 5 FIVE! stupid speed 'pillows'. i wouldn't mind but the road surface is so bad you cant speed without losing teeth. i wonder if re-tarmacing was even considered?

No Way Hosé

Pot-holes are a well known and effective speed control method favoured by the higher order sandalistas and lentilists, which also happens to save the local councila lot of money in repairs so they can spend it on useful stuff like five a day coordinators and having all their pamphlets translated into sanskrit.

Heavens isn't that a lucky coincidence.
