Hi forum!

Have 2 cars.
The family mobile currently carries a plate my dad gave me. Weekend car is on a normal plate.
I’m thinking of getting a new car. I’d like to put the family plate on it when it arrives. Once new car is here, I’d get rid of weekend car. Suspect it’ll be private sale so will have to insure / tax 3 for a bit. New car would be more to insure than weekend car so would have to swap the no claims over.

Meanwhile, I have my eye on a similar-ish plate for my wife to go on the family mobile.

So the burning question:

Do I have to:
Buy new car
Await v5
Do the reg change for family plate
Await v5 for family mobile
Buy wife plate
Put on family mobile

.. because I think this means changing insurance 5 times, which knowing insurers could be 250 quid in fanny on fees.

Is there a slicker way to do it?

Ps - “private plate wker” expected by post 5. I accept this. smile

The process you outline seems right to me.
You may be surprised about the insurance cost for plate changes as my insurer made no charge for a plate changes if it was done via the online portal and not involving a call to a real person..
I have also mentioned plate changes when taking out insurance on a new car and the admin cost for the plate change was waived as it had been notified at the inception of the policy.

If it’s a new, unregistered, car you’re buying you can put your current plate on a retention certificate and get the dealer selling you your new car to register it with that number from day 1.
